Training with Live birds
http://www.oodmag.com/hunting/dogs/t...irds-tips-pro/
Was reading some old "dog" articles in the OOD archives. Thought this one was worth a read by those training a young dog this Spring. Excellent article by Tom Goldsmith.
Only thing I would add is that bob white quail can not be released in ON, and birds kept in a cage ( no flight pen) won't fly hard if kept more than a week.

When I was young I was looking for a German SP. I went to a breeder in the Delhi area. He had really nice dogs. He took a quail in his hand, out to the middle of a field, swinging it in large circles all the way. Then he tucked it under some grass tuft and came back to the dog which was facing the other way. The dog walking serpentine went directly to the bird and flushed on command.
I don't know if this type of bird launching is happening now. Seems a good method to me.
