I had hunted this bush on Sunday afternoon with the kids and as we were walking in we were busted by a bird. We quickly set up in another area but no luck.
I snuck into the same area Wednesday morning and as I got settled in I heard birds gobbling everywhere except the area that I was hunting. Around 6:00am a goose flys over the trees and sets off a gobble within 50 yrds of where I am. Shortly thereafter I see him fly down and hit the field in full strut with a hen close by. I could see him through the trees working his way away from my location. But I stayed quiet and waited for him to funnel down the edge towards me. He strutted in the field for about 45 minutes without a hen in sight, then through the trees on the other side of the field I see a hen pop out. Tommy boy quickly spins around and continues his dance for her. The hen slowly worked her way down towards me and dragged the tom along with her. As he hit the 30 yrd mark, I put the bead on his head and it was lights out.
I called the kids immediately to tell them news and they were pumped. They begged mom to stay home so they could see the turkey...no luck as she had to be at the school early.
All in all it was a great morning to be out in the woods. And the show I got that morning is one I won't forget anytime soon.
Stats:
Just shy of 20lbs
9 1/4" beard
1 1/8" spurs
I forgot to add I used my new turkey tote (seen in the picture) and it worked like a charm for carrying the bird out of the bush to the truck. The kids started making call lanyards and totes in the fall...better than Rainbow Loom, for all those with young kids.
