Naming a new pup
Why... on earth... would anyone EVER tell a 5 yr old they can name a puppy? lol
My wife made that mistake, completely not realizing that a 5 yr old's world is tiny. All the names that spring to mind for her are friggin disney characters and her muslim classmates - which none of us can pronounce.
I can just imagine the name i'll end up yelling for at the dog park. This is going to be fun.

The mother is a st. bernard/bernese mountain dog. They think the father is a german sheperd/black lab mix.

Naming a new pup
Buddy of mine tried the same approach with his daughter. The guy is a monster of a man and he got a big bad monster dog. It's name is princess. It's a boy.
I'm not that cool either. I have a dog named Dance. She was adopted. That's my excuse.
Good luck.

I was more referring to size but I get the picture from your description.
I am not sure what your missus was thinking telling your 5 year old she could name the dog (assuming she didn't clear it with you first). She sounds a lot like my wife. My wife gets caught up in things due to excitement and doesn't think to ask what my opinion is on what I consider important decisions and the next thing I know she has gone and done something which I have had no input in. Usually it works out ok but the odd time it has blown up in our faces and we are left with a mess that usually yours truly has to deal with and clean up.

Yup. Yuppity yup yup! That's my wife exactly - excitement level through the roof, forethought level through the floor. 90% of the time it's adorable and works out well. lol
So far my wife is REALLY liking my suggestion of 'Tikka'. Now, just have to make the 5 yr old think it's her idea. lol

We usually sit down as a family, and have a discussion. Input is taken, but then steered in such a way that our son basically gets to pick from two that we all agree on....makes it much easier.
Rules. 1. No people names. 2. Has to be two sharp syllables, which can then easily be heard at a distance.
"Camo" is perfectly acceptable as a favorite colour.

Those are my rules as well. Drives me nuts when folks give animals ppl names.

lol My parents got an Akita show pup (they had no intention of showing her) that was named Lily Warrior Princess, after the Zena character. It was probably common for a while.
