2x4 for stringers isn't the greatest (depends on weight). you might see some lateral movement if there is no bracing other than ground and at the top.
2x4 are fine for the rungs as long as the they are not pulled out from the stringers and screws (if used) don't break. nails plus heavy wire stapled over the rungs and along the entire stringer is cheap and safe.
have built a few in the past (even fold down versions). sorry, don't have plans at hand. but pictures show the idea. regarding measurement: resist to put the rungs too far apart, measure your kitchen chair for the basic geometry of the seat and put the shooting rest on when the stand is in place

Some of the measurements I'm interested in are;

- width and depth of seat and foot rest
- overall height and width of stand
- height of seat from foot rest
- spacing of steps on ladder
- length and height of hand rails

This looks like a great design!

Had the truck at the stand today and had a tape measure in the console. Measurements are approximate.

- the 16' 2x4s are 2' apart (outside to outside).
- steps are 12" apart on centre
- top railing and seat support are 3'
- top railing to foot rest is 2'
- top railing to seat is 12.5"
- top railing to bottom of seat support 15"
- Diagonal bracing is 49" long

Hope that all makes sense. If using these measurements your butt will be 15' off the ground and rail height will be 16'. I added the "gate" at the front to use as a rest. It's comfortable for shooting my crossbow from. I took some pics today but hard to see a lot of detail with all the leaf on.

Great tree stands guys...... but if someone can't find the time to make one, SAIL (I know it's not on their website but I was in there the other day) has a really nice one on sale for $99 bucks..... something to consider for those that don't have the time/equipment or know how to make one...

Wow... Thats a coincidence....lol
We were just talking yesterday about how i built these 10+ years ago, and other than their weight.. They are by far our fav stands... Wide enough for a 6' 240lb manin insulated coveralls and hvy coat for dec hunts.. Big enough seat you can lean back in and not fall out.. Wide enough rails to set a cup of tea on during turkey season etc etc...
I was just going to start designing and building roofs for them for rainy days and i stumbled on the photos on Pinterest
Wild.. Never knew anybody kept the photos and redistributed them.....

Thats the best photo.. Materials were pt ( pressure treated) and show no signs of rot yet ( touch wood.. May have just jinxed myself lol)

Since the ladder itself is 2x4... We made the originals 8' high to the seat...

We added 8' to some and joined them with a 2x6 up the outside to reduce flex.. I would make the ladder out of 2x6 if i do it again

The other thing it needs is eyebolts at the back to ratchet strap to the tree...and we notched the back of the seat boards about 2" so it fits around trees better
Next time im out ill grab some more pics.. Weve shot alot of deer out of these stands..theyre heavy... But dont squeak or make noise like the metal ones
