LOL. Our Shepherd/Husky was the same way. We could call her to come,rattle truck keys,coax her with cookies,but,if we so much as uttered "squirrel" under our breath,she was gone like a shot and we better have had the door open because she's going through it.

really, what is it with squirrels?
does anyone have a scientific paper that plausibly explains why dogs tend to react differently to squirrels than to other prey?

LOL. Really? Scientific paper? LOL Not freakin' likely. It's very likely only because the squirrels are the only "prey" animals that happen to be around....other than cats,of course. Ah geez,did I say that out loud?

I think the dog sees the backyard as his territory. The JRT will go for chipmunks, moles, mice, racoons, birds , people - anything in the backyard that in his mind isn't suppose to be there. He sits up on the top of the couch in front of the big window looking out on the backyard to keep an eye on things.
(Still too hot to do anything but sit in the basement and post pics.

I've always had a JRT . Love my setters, but there's something about a JRT that always makes me smile/tested.
Taught the most difficult kids when I was teaching , worked at the jail /PP for 20 years and had foster teens. My husband says a JRT just continues my need for a challenge.
