Maybe Harper didn't do as much or get as far as he and most of envisioned on c-68. However he has done a fair amount for gun owners overall. Far, far more than we would've gotten from the anti- gun lefties.
Let us all hope it wasn't for nothing and we end up back were we ten years ago, or possibly even worse off.
the problem is that we as firearm owners are not as big of a voter group that they would cater to us (unlike south the border). only Harper tried to get some votes out of us; he got the votes and he threw the dog a bone as promised
Regarding the topic of lawful firearm ownership, like it or not you have only one choice who you vote for. (Economic considerations aside).
However, don't be mistaken, they won't do more than absolutely necessary either - they also need some incentive for the next election and the more they cater to us the more votes they might loose somewhere else.
The answer is not to rely on any party, but to make sure we maintain our numbers and represent active votes.
The example regarding the ownership fee blew back quite a bit, and that in a fairly anti-gun climate. I think it had to do with the fact that they realized this could be done with anything you own (even if it does not generate revenue); e.g. you own an ounce of gold - why not pay annually $100 for the right to own it. What about art?
You should also register it. You think that's obscured? Some jurisdictions have records on who owns gold...
An annual fee to own guns is not likely to happen in Canada, for reasons that ought to be obvious: many of the people who most need firearms for practical purposes would be most affected by fees.
Also, such a fee would run into constitutional problems if imposed by a federal government. It treads on powers reserved to the provinces.

It's Wynne that scares me most. She is anti gun and desperate for cash. More and more everyday. These teacher contracts will cost $billions. It needs to come from somewhere and there isn't a "revenue tool" that out of control junkie won't use. The fees would harm those who mostly don't vote left so under the bus they will go.

her retirement pension plan is not a new idea - similar plans have proven to screw people in other jurisdictions: by the time the ones who paid for it can retire, no money will be left. the thief who put the scam in place long gone and the government in power down the road will tell the poor fellas that's their own fault as they did not take the responsibility to plan ahead themself.
given that track record, if there's someone going trying to get away with a fee, it's going to be her. hopefully, history repeats itself again with respect to the outcome.
first obstacle is that they need an accurate registry. thankfully the message how wasteful it was is being repeated over and over again - and that message will hopefully last for some time. had they put the cost on the owners, we would still have the registry!
Collecting money for license fees requires an Infrastructure ( unionized PS workers) and a database to track compliance. It wont be a voluntary and cash process.
