Cabinets use keys, safes have a combination lock.

They are both legal, but only one will protect your valuables.

I ended up ordering it, there was one at the local TSC that I could examine and I was comfortable with it

my old one was home-made out of plywood with padlocks, legal but easily broken into by someone with any determination

this way I have something decent to keep important documents etc and accommodate the guns safely - I wouldn't spend thousands on a safe like some of the Cadillac models you see advertised but I think this is a sensible compromise

The only complaint I have with lower end cabinets is they aren't deep enough for scoped rifles unless they're put in on an angle which cuts down on capacity. I have plans to build a display case which holds 8 guns and hangs on the wall. If I ever get at and get it finished,I'll post pictures.
