Default What animal do you think this bone is from?

    Hi all,

My kids went north (around Haliburton) last week and brought home this bone they found in the forest. It's quite large and I'm guessing it's a vertebrae but we are trying to figure out from what? I've set it up beside whatever was around me for sizing.
Somebody told me it's probably from a deer, but my guess is it's from something larger (moose?).
Also, is there a way for me to quickly bleach it?
    Thoughts (and thanks)?

    Vertebrae for sure.

Have you been around a butchered deer? The backbone can range from an inch to 3 inches around, maybe even a little more.

I'd say it's from a dead animal...LMAO...sorry couldn't resist...could be deer or moose but most likely deer but in all honesty who really knows....

Obviously it is a cougar vertebrae.

Take the warning labels off. Darwin will solve the problem.

I would also guess big deer or small moose, but someone with better perspective on those things will probably chime in.

For the whitening, I would start with standard 3% hydrogen peroxide from your favourite store. Submerge the vertebra and see how it looks after a few hours, or overnight.

I pulled a deer skull from the bush last year that was about the same colour and patina as your vertebra. I've attached the results of the overnight soak. Actually I might have forgotten about it for a day or so. Luckily the teeth are still holding. The picture shows the correct orientation on my computer, but for some reason it's flipped here. You get the idea anyway.

Id say this is from a deer and probably one of the rear vertab.
From whitening i use 30 vol cream peroxide from any drugstore. it is used to bleach hair... you brush it on , leave it for 12h or so then rince with water. repeat if your not satisfied.
