What's the camp penalty for a missed shot ?

In our camp,the misser gets to turn his hat backwards and does the supper dishes.....by himself......while everyone else laughs at him.

Who hasn't missed? I would have to say ribbing someone for having done so is incredibly childish if not stupid.
I remember a young hunter, who either missed or let a deer get by him. He got his ribbing, all in good fun, you say? Except in this case, the young hunter, steeled himself to the point, such that he was determine, it should not happen again. The following day he shot and fatally wound his uncle, a family friend, who was doing the dogging on the drive.

I don't think he deliberately shot anyone, but rather shot at a target that he hadn't clearly identified because he wasn't going to let anything get by him.

That is a tragic story.
Very sorry to hear that.

However; improper handling of a firearm and not properly identifying a target are not someone else's fault; ever.

I guess I didn't make it totally clear, but you rightly have understood what happen. He was a young hunter, it may even have been his first hunt, I'm not sure, but it may have been his last. And rightly so, no one else was ultimately responsible for pulling the trigger. Knowing his uncle, he may have even joined in, on doing a bit of the ribbing. However belittling someone, and poking fun at their ability, might have some fur reaching effects, unbeknown to those involved in doing it. In this case it did, and proved tragic. I'm not saying there might not be a place for such fun. However, during the hunt may not be the place.

Trying to deflect the blame for such a horrible tragedy on something like a hunt camp tradition that is quite common is ridiculous. Clearly this young hunter wasn't ready to hunt. The fact he passed his hunter safety course didn't guarantee he was capable of making a judgement. How somebody mistakes a deer for a human likely wearing blaze is puzzling. That kid was trigger happy and that same accident could possibly have happened 5 years later. Not sure making someone do dishes promotes trigger happy behaviour. As for calling the practice "stupid" if you knew the hunters in our camp and their credentials regarding firearms, game laws and basic common sense you would rethink your comments. Yet they have all missed deer and have shirt tails on the nail. Its a simple fun tradition nothing more.

At our deer camp we have swift and cruel punishment. That night you lose your shirt tail and it goes on a nail on the wall. Incredibly I even have a few shirt tails on that nail.

The tradition of losing your shirt tail for a miss has been around hunt camps for years . If you can't afford to lose a t-shirt and take some ribbing about your miss, you certainly would not be a lot a fun to be with around most camps . Also, there are more laughs about a miss than there are a kill.

Costs a buck per miss to the buck pot for us. And some good natured ribbing. And makes for a nice pot at the end of the week.
