Animal Cruelty Act outlaws ear cropping/tail docking.
Another province adopts Animal Cruelty laws that prohibit tail docking....
The new rules are part of the Animal Cruelty Act, adopted in July by the P.E.I. Legislature. It outlaws cropping ears of and docking tails of dogs, horses or cattle.
It's a practice vets on the Island ended five years ago as unethical conduct.
Dr. Gary Morgan, registrar of the PEI Veterinary Medical Association, says his group had input on the new Animal Cruelty Act.
"There's no therapeutic benefit or medical reason to perform cosmetic surgeries. So it really flies in the face of our ethical commitments to animals," said Dr. Gary Morgan, registrar of the PEI Veterinary Medical Association.
Now, P.E.I. has become the second province in Canada to outlaw the practice altogether. It goes a step further, even if you can find someone to dock your dog's tail or crop it's ears you could end up being fined or even face jail time.
