Be in a place that have deer.

I agree. For rookie hunter calling will likely do more harm than good.

thanks for all the responses. we are legal for bow, there was no gun hunt here at all. id like to try getting a bag of corn and dumping it. were working on borrowing a couple trail cams also. we dont have a tree stand unfortunately. there are however a ton of tracks all over the place. we sat out from 430 this morning until 12 this afternoon and didnt see anything. my brother is going back tonight. and ill be back in tomorrow morning.

Better to be paranoid about your scent cover than not. Try and put out your feed, cams in the rain, wear rubber soled boots. Pinch points, funnels and visible water crossings are your best bet. Topography maps of your local property help to scout potential set ups. Best of luck!

Just buy some nice deer grunt tube-I love Quaker Boy, but there are all kinds out there. You may be surprised how many deer(if they can hear you)will come in to investigate-or in a rut ,to find you. You just do not overdo it,2-3 short grunts ,then wait at least 30-45 min.Let the call work on them .And while waiting-be on red alert ,firearm in hand or really close........ they can show up in 2 minutes-or 25 minutes,no rush for them. They will sometimes circle you-so watch your downwind side. And remember, your ears are you biggest ally-unless the ground is really wet , you will likely hear them before seeing them, and can prepare accordingly.
Doe in heat bleats also can work nicely-bleat 5-10 times, then as above.

thanks gbk. how loud should these calls be? were juts sitting in a hedgerow, theres a small bush about 800 yards out, thats where most of the tracks seem to be heading. so were not sure how loud these calls need to be. the one my brother has seems to be pretty quite. he has a primos original can bleat call. should i invest in a mouth call?

I tried grunt calling to a deer that was walking away from me, it dropped down and took off, did not even look back.

The way I see it I cant tell the difference between dog barks, sure a growl is easy to tell but my dogs will sometimes bark when someone is approaching the house and all my dogs start barking and the neighbours dog too, sometimes one will bark at me when we are playing and the others do not even look over. I cannot tell the difference but the dogs sure can, and in a similar way I believe deer have different grunts that I cant tell the difference, but the deer that took off sure did.

You may get away with a grunt tube in a non pressured area but on public land I would not use one, best strategy is that of surprise: get in early, stay late, no scents, no sounds.

    Hi Nate
I believe if you plan to grunt to call something to you from 800 yards, will likely not work. If you even try to call the loudest you can,i do not think (can not prove, because I never run a trial on grunting distances......)that maybe 200 yards the best you can be heard. But again deer have big ears. Yet 800 yards is to far.........Plus the wind (if any )will also blow the sound away from the deer(if the deer was upwind from you-if it was not, You would likely not see that deer anyway ,because she/he would be gone long time ago due of your "smell")....The grunt tube can be blown loud enough, and I never seen it having negative effects of using it loud-er(yet it may spook deer you did not see...and was to come your ways for one reason or another-but this is a chance you need to take)I tend to softly grunt if the deer is within eyesight, and yet to see deer running away from it......but it can happen. The bleat can has "shorter reach",i like my Quaker boy bleat in heat can as well, it Is a bit louder then the HS bleat I had earlier .I believe it can reach 100-150 yard's maybe. Just do not overdo it-if you see a deer,do not fidget a lot(slow movement is OK)thus bleating with a can to have a deer come to you that way is almost impossible(you need to tip the can)soft grunting(if the deer is close-grunt away from the deer-so the deer will not pinpoint you hopefully)will give you better chances. What do you have to loose anyway? If the deer is not coming your way-it is not coming. So-trying to call it in can increase your odds. Practice at home, and try to watch some deer vocalization video, and mimic it. Happy hunting. And,I think grunting/bleating on public land versus private land has no bearing on your success. As far my experience goes......Yet I grunt talked with hunters on 2 occasion-until figured out,it is not a deer, and once I put a shotgun hunter on a stalk -looking for me ,after I bleat few times........So, be alert hunting with a gun, or with archery if hunting from the ground.

ok thanks. thankfully this is private property and its surrounded by fields, so should any other hunters be around and trying to stalk me thinking im a deer i would see them a long ways away lol.
