I just went through this with my renewal. This is what I found out after my premium went from $325 all inclusive to $595 when I started asking hard questions. ATV's and snow machines must have their own stand-alone policy to be covered for PL&PD,fire, theft and collision/upset. Medical coverage and third party liability is usually included in an all-peril policy. It doesn't matter if the rec vehicle is on a trailer attached to the vehicle. The only thing covered under your vehicle policy will be the trailer unless you carry cargo insurance which, for a non-commercial customer,is prohibitively expensive. Rec vehicles in the bed of a pick-up are only covered if there's a cargo rider. If an ATV or snow machine comes loose and falls out of the truck and there's injuries or fatalities, the driver/policy holder will be in for one he** of a lawsuit. Insurance carriers will pay to their minimum. After that all bets are off.
So,lets say your ATV was stolen or your had collision damage. An insurer will only pay what the used machine was worth at the time of the claim according to black book value less the deductible. If you have an older machine, you need to weigh the value vs. payout vs. premium charged. Most of the time,it only makes sense to cover for liabilty and property damage the same as an old beater car. I took the all-peril clause off and kept PL&PD,saving $214. After all,how much do you think an insurance company will pay for a 10 year old machine?
