    Lucky guy.
We were up at the livestock auction in St Jacobs 2 Thursday's ago. I was surprised to see 2 wild hogs in the pig holding area waiting for the Tuesday auction. They were big but not like that. I sure hope the buyer knew what they were getting into. Any registered high bidder could have ended up with them. Could add new problems...

They are not kept as pets. a friend of mine used to raise them a number of years ago, they are not true wild boars as they are kept in captivity just like any other swine.
By the way , the meat was excellent , very tasty the chops have more marbling in them similar to beef steak.

There was another fellow that raised them out by Drumbo , one winter after a heavy snowfall that damaged his fences , they escaped but were all shot during that summer and during that years deer hunt.

Not me!!! That's how wild pigs get established in some areas!! He did the right thing, and the same thing 99% of us would have done. The other 1% would lie about it, lol.

Well this one was. If you ask me, they never should have been allowed to have it as a pet. Some people raise them for slaughter, but to keep one as a pet is beyond foolish.

Big Boy hadn’t been sighted in the area because he was behind wildlife fencing at Highlandview, where Lampron’s family used to breed boars. They sold the rest of the herd about 18 months ago, but kept big Boy.

Lampron is still trying to figure out how he got loose, and then wandered many kilometres away. She noticed Big Boy missing on Monday while she was out in her fields.

“I cannot find anything,” Lampron said. “I’m thinking maybe it’s a coyote or hunters (scaring it) or something, because he’s never been off my property.”

She’s angry someone would shoot the seven-year-old animal, noting that he was very docile.

“He would run to you for food, not because he wanted to attack anybody,” she said. “He loved his food. A lot of people knew my Big Boy.

    “Obviously, it was somebody’s pig.”

Blair, a hunter, said he shot the boar because he was aware of a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry edict from 2014 allowing farmers, landowners or hunters to shoot wild, or feral boars on sight as nuisance animals. In addition to the damage and disease concerns, wild boars can also pose a threat to people.

It never crossed his mind the animal might have been a pet.

“I think I was justified in what I did,” said Blair, who only learned the boar had been a pet after the Sun published the story online on Thursday. "This couldn't be worse."

It'll be interesting to see how this one turns out...legally speaking. I know MNRF sent out green light last year, I have the email confirming that, but will the owner press the matter?
The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

I don't think the owner has a leg to stand on as she was responsible for the pigs escape and ultimate demise. If the guy that shot it wants to be fair he could offer to share the meat with her.

It looks like it is the owners loss, even if it was kept as a pet , it is up to the owner to ensure that it does not escape . A boar is not thought of as a pet , it is still livestock just as a cow or horse , the owner may see them as a pet but the onus is upon them to make sure they do not escape.

I agree Hunter John and I think the article also indicates that the "Pet" was 10 km away from home. Not to many rural people who see a boar in their yard are going to go outside and call here "piggy piggy here piggy piggy"

I agree. In fact, she should think about closing her mouth before someone realizes that her negligence in not containing the animal had potential for signficant damage to other property owners.
