Got handed a J.S Sharpes 'Scottie'

Good day all, new here, and to fly fishing.

I was given a J.S Sharpes Aberdeen, 9' #6(?) 'Scottie' 'impregnated' split bamboo rod. It's a three piece, and came with an extra tip section. I believe it's from the 1960's ?

So....where do I start? Reel, line, size/type of fish? Decent starter rod?

Honestly, I would say a vintage bamboo fly rod is not a great starting rod. They are heavy, awkward, take a certain skill to cast. A skill that does not translate well to newer light weight rods. It's like giving a kid a muscle car from the same era as his first car. First of all, it is freakin' awesome. Second, it's got a bit too much power and weight to it.

I would honestly suggest getting a $100-200 starter package with rod, reel and line. Temple Fork Outfitters make decent starter sets. I've got a 4 weight TFO that's landed a thousand fish without any trouble. Except when I lost the tip of my four piece rod. When I needed a replacement, I just ordered one. You will not be able to order a new tip for your 1960's bamboo rod. Put it on the mantle, hold it every once and a while and take it out to fish when you're confident with a fly rod.

I see you have an extra tip, but you get the point.

Alternatively, fish the hell out of it till it breaks. You only live once!
