In the 1974 Guns & Ammo Annual, there is a velocity chart for the .40 Caliber Dixie Caplock, the top charge was 120 grains of FFFg in a rifle with 40" barrel length. It delivered a velocity of 2463 fps, averaged over 5 shots. It noted, "Firing with increasingly heavy charges was discontinued when recoil and muzzle blast became objectionable." I can't image what the pressure dynamic was, but remember with black powder it is distributed over the entire length of the barrel, unlike smokeless powder where the pressure peak is reached pretty much within the chamber of the firearm, and declines as the projectile moves down the barrel. So the question you have to ask yourself is the 40,000 psi a ' barrel rating' or is it a 'powder chamber' rating? I would think it is the former, rather than the latter. This makes sense when you consider the pressure peak for a black powder rifle is reached as the projectile leaves the muzzle. This means that the powder chamber rating is considerably less that 40,000 psi.

I have TC Omega and TC Impact. Both stainless, synthetic camo stocks. Like other have said, with a 250 grain shockwave its very good at putting down deer. I use 120 grain magnum charge (2 60grain equivalent pellets).

I've got an older optima. My only complaint is two...maybe three shots tops....and you have to take the breach plug out and clean the barrel or your not reloading it again!! But it is a nice shooting gun and it just feels comfortable in your hands. If u know what I mean!!

I am having some issues with my accura. It seems very sensitive to a dirty barrel.I shoot two shots with it and at 50 yrds they will practically go through the same hole. The third shot is a flyer.I adjusted the load and spit swabbed between shots but I still get the crud ring. It seems to prefer a perfectly clean barrel. Not a big deal for hunting but it makes it a bit frustrating at the range.

Welcome to the club I guess, there are no issues, my accura is very sensitive too. It's pretty accurate even at 200 yards, but it likes to be cleaned.I run dry patches after every shot for 10-12 shots. then I run brush and solvent and dry patch to clean the ring. Then I shoot primer to dry solvent completely, then another run for 10-12 shots.

It seems a bit odd that my wolf. for less than half the price, isn't as fussy as my accura. I am glad I kept it though because I am not comfortable using the accura just yet for hunting.
