Petty sure I set mine to general use and just played with the sensitivity and water depth until I was happy with what I was reading

What is "deeper inland lakes"? 50 feet? 300 feet?
We would need more specifics before anything reasonable could be offered in response.

Not sure why you couldn't? I use my lowance X67 Ice machine in open water all the time... I attach an open water transducer and rig it to a boat. I've fished water as deep as 120 ft no problem. I mainly use the graph mode, but have also used the flasher on calm days to vertically jig. The elite is a stronger machine then the X67, so...

Hey Chadder, do you use it regularly through the ice in deep water? Are you familiar with the functions and adjustments?
I ask because it should work fine and the best settings for fishing deep water through the ice should be pretty close what you want for soft water. A few on water adjustment and you should be good to go.
Not familiar with the Ex4 but use Lowrance and pretty comfortable with it.
It should be in manual mode, fish id off, noise reject low (unless you have electrical noise from motor/trolling motor) surface clarity low/medium, sensitivity 90% (and then adjusted on water) Grey/colour line around 60 (and then adjusted on water), ping speed fast, scroll speed fast. I don't know if the Ex4 has it but if you switch out the transducer some models have the option of changing the transducer type on the head unit.
That should get you started then you always want to fine tune on the water.
That's off the top of my head so if I missed something or am off base somewhere pipe up.
Heeere fishy fishy fishy fishy! :fish:
