Barbed Wire across Snowmobile Trail
Keep your eyes open out there, be safe !!!
Ontario Provincial Police have issued a warning after barbed wire was found along a snowmobile trail in a community approximately 150 kilometres northwest of Toronto.
The wire was found across four entrances to a section of Crown land in Grey Highlands.
Police said a single strand of barbed wire was found at each entrance to the land, in the area of Grey Road 31 and Road 57D. In each case, the wire was strung parallel to the ground at a height of approximately one metre.
Along with the wires were signs that read: "Snowmobile Trail Closed... Snowmobiles Stay Off to Avoid Prosecution. Caution - Beware of Wire Barriers on Closed Trails... Rob Roy LOA, 27 December 2015."
Police said the signs were placed on the land illegally, and that they are trying to find whoever is responsible. If the signs or wire are found again, police said they could lay criminal charges.
The wire has been removed, but officers said it could have led to serious injuries or death if a snowmobiler had been passing through the area and didn't see it.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact provincial police at 1-888-310-1122, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

My uncle had a wire catch him on his chin when riding his sled, he was lucky it got stuck on his full face helmet and tossed him rather than what could have happened.
Find the guy and charge him with attempted murder, maybe then this BS would stop.

In picton a few years ago there were some snowmobilers killed in this exact manner.
As far as im concerned whoever did this did so with the intent to kill or injure. Disgusting

Now I'm wondering how common this is. I found a wire strung across a trail in a conservation area last winter. My husband and I took it down. Do these idiots not know how dangerous that is?

I think they very well understand the danger, but their brains fail to comprehend the ramifications of what their doing. Very underdeveloped frontal lobes....and since there are obviously not small kids ..then yea, idiots fits the bill

I had a fellow hunter about the sound of the snowmobiles while we were hunting jack rabbits on public land, it made me step back.
Just because you do not want to participate in some activities does not mean that others should not be allowed to participate.
I calmly stopped him and asked him what he was doing, his hunting is not something that everyone would do and maybe some people would want it to be stopped but until you are supporting that snowmobiler and their safe and legal participation in their sport will they support you in your want to hunt.
This goes for every single activity on public land, this is some hat thinking that their walk in the park is too noisy so they should shut down these riders, they have absolutely no thoughts of others just their selves.

I've found this before on crown and public land. It's always snow fence or page wire someone has stretched across a trail to keep other hunters out,so,I always carry fencing pliers in my day pack. I've never found single-strand wire or barbed wire stretched across on purpose. To do so shows intent to deliberately maim or kill. I'm glad the Police are all over this.

If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

This is a mining community and exploration continues at a frenzy. Some of their work involves stringing miles of copper wire along the ground through an area then sending a charge through it. Its supposed to let them know if any minerals are beneath ground. Or something like that. After this work is done these private companies were just leaving this wire in the bush. We'd get calls on moose tangled up in this stuff and then my chum was pulled right off his machine when a suspended wire caught him under the visor.
One call to the company put an end to that--in this area anyway.

3 years ago some-one "booby-trapped" our ATV-trail (wire across and broken beer-bottles in the ruts) . This is privately owned land (200 acres) . The owner (who lives near Toronto) had authorized me and a handful of neighbors (of mine) to look after his property and allowed us to hunt , swim and trail-ride there . --- Our trail-cameras recorded only deer and some smaller crap but not the perpetrator . --- Had we caught the guilty party , he might have developed a few "health-issues" before we would have handed him to the cops . --- C'est la vie .
