Does anyone know if this would apply to owners of currently unmarked firearms? For example, would we have to go out and get our existing firearms marked?

Maybe they should tatoo the foreheads of people convicted of firearm crimes. Hey, wait a minute. Lets make gun crime illegal. That would solve it right?

"However, an independent study commissioned by the government said the cost to stamp or engrave markings for Canadian manufacturers and large importers would range from nothing at all to $25 per firearm. It was not possible to gauge the impact on individuals and small importers."

I'd like to see how you stamp/engrave AND blue (or perform modern surface treatment equal in quality to the manufacturers') on an upper end firearm for $25 without reducing its value by a 3 to 4 digit $ figure.
These "news" might look at the facts when it comes to JT promises, but certainly not at the facts when it comes to how stupid it were to implement in Canada a policy for war ridden African countries. It does not even work there, but OUR police desperately needs it:
"There is support among police for the marking scheme in order to expedite investigations into gun crimes and detect firearms trafficking, smuggling and stockpiling, the Public Safety notice says. The import markings can also help law enforcement determine whether to focus on a smuggling operation."Tracing can offer early investigative leads, contribute to cost efficiencies for police by simplifying efforts, focus investigations given that time is critical to solving crimes, and help to build a strong evidentiary case to obtain a conviction," the notice says."

Ever heard of something like an angle grinder, a dremel or a file? Next thing you hear is they want to register ordinary tools to combat smugglers.
Really, can you imagine what they would target if they ever were able to ban legal firearms? All they can do is banning things they don't understand. Well if you cannot cook why should your neighbor be allowed to own a kitchen knife?

This applies to imports of new firearms only, but,it's still stupid. Every firearm already has a serial number. What an extra number is supposed to do,only a flaming Liberal moron would understand.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

I haven't read the regulations, but I would be very surprised if it did not apply to future importations of used firearms as well. That's not to say that it would apply retroactively to firearms already in the country.

If applied retroactively there is potential to ruin the value of older firearms. This would be an issue with many collectors and I see it as a means for the government to treat your property in any way they like. It is analogous to allowing someone to pour herbicide on your lawn because someone is allergic to grass.

...and what about if you travel with your firearms frequently; would it then apply retrospectively?
If yes, you may wonder why you need to accept a depreciation of your property to maintain your right to freely leaf and enter Canada.
If not, then how does it make sense if I don't need the "CA" in front of the number to identify that it is my firearm.
No matter how far left anyone is, to support the UN marking requirement requires one to be brain-dead. Let's see how JT et alia get their neck out of this one; governing is a bit more difficult than campaigning
