    Default Bill C-246

    FYI
Sopuck concerned with Liberal MP’s animal rights bill
    February 26, 2016

Ottawa, ON – Today Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa and the Official Opposition Critic for Wildlife Conservation and Parks Canada, is concerned with a Liberal Member of Parliament’s bill that would drastically change the status of animals in Canada.

    Here is the bill itself:

The fact is that cruelty to animals will inevitably be moved from property crimes to crimes against public morals because this is our cultural view of animals. This is true of people on this board also, as we see whenever there is a thread about dogs being shot or acts of blatant cruelty: people condemn the perpetrator on moral grounds, not on the grounds that he has damaged or destroyed property.

The previous attempt to enact that change included specific protections for agriculture, hunting, and fishing, and it ought to have passed. But it did not, and so now we step backwards, to a version that simply promises to criminalize any act of cruelty, although legal justification or excuse and colour of right are defences. This should be a very simple matter yet Ottawa continually messes it up.

I see the bill also contains a provision to block the importation of fur products.

It also amends the Textile Labelling Act to modify requirements in respect of animal hair and fur and cat and dog skin, hair and fur.
It also amends the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act to add products made in whole or in part of dog or cat fur or skin to Schedule 2 to that Act to prohibit those products from being imported into Canada or manufactured, advertised or sold in Canada.

A liberal majority government. What could go wrong? Hopefully the Senate can delay it long enough to kill it by the next election because right now all someone has to say is "Harper was against it" and JT will champion it.

A Liberal majority, yet this is still a private member's bill.

And that's why we voted a Liberal majority because Ontarians especially those in Toronto, are of superior intelligence, worldly and aware of what the various parties truly represent at their core. I sleep better at night knowing we have a Liberal majority, and so should you.
