I have 5 acres of field behind my home. My inlaws, prior to ill health, had a huge garden at one time that they worked hard to keep nutritious food on the table for their family (My wife and her siblings). Perhaps I should post a sign at the local Social Services office letting clients know they could come over and plant themselves a good garden (for free) (I pay the land taxes and no strings attatched)? I can't do anything about a warm place for them to sleep, or education for themselves, but they would have an opportunity to provide food for themselves and little or no cost. The catch would be they have to work for it instead of me working for them (my hard earned tax dollars). Do you think I would get any takers Fishermccann?

Exactly. Here in London they are proposing babysitting services at city hall meetings so "more women can get out". Mercy. Have they ever heard of a babysitter.

Free garden plots might just be the wrong example to make this point. The free Toronto community garden plots have waiting lists. Most of them are very near to subsidized housing neighbourhoods and are mainly used by locals.

There was a Country that managed to reach your goals back in the 70's. A large number of the population got to attend schools where they got an State provided education for FREE. They where feed and sheltered while at school, given pretty much everything they needed while there. For anyone coming out of the schools there jobs, and the state insured that if there was not enough work in an area that it's citizens could move to an area of the country that needed workers, all paid for by the state. This wonderful Country general provided for and protected it's citizens from cradle to grave. The Country's Government was only able to stay in power for about four years (1975-1979) before the country was invaded and forced to adopt western ways...

There are more then a few that would be more then happy to take you up on that offer. Problem is Everyone that would happens to be too busy working their butts off to pay the welfare of the ones that would not. If I lived close enough to you, I would be down looking at tractors before this gets a reply.

The people living and working in those neighbourhoods, I would guess are also Immigrants and come from places which have a more agrarian society.

There are more then a few that would be more then happy to take you up on that offer. Yes, I realize if I was close to a major city that many who are stuck within the concrete jungle would jump at the chance. It would be a pleasure to have folks come and work their own plot. I have a farmer that comes to take the hay off, but he is hit n miss each year. I don't want the land to turn into a brush maze.

There is one local farmer just on the edge of the city. Real nice, popular fellow. He gives up a few acres each year so others can plant a garden. 90% of the people using the land are volunteers. Those volunteers give up their time to raise and pick those fresh vegetables. They don't keep them for themselves they donate them to the needy.......

There are a lot of people willing to help, too bad not as many willing to do their own work.
