Default Rant : Windows 10 upgrade

Just a warning to all the members about the current "FREE" upgrade promotion offered by Microsoft in regards to an upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10.

Well, I was led to believe that I would more or less keep all my settings and configurations as is.
NOT! Microsoft does not play nice with other companies especially its arch rival GOOGLE in which Chrome is my default browser. The upgrade completely flushed my favourites bar, passwords, browsing history, etc.
I have been slowly rebuilding everything in the last hour. What a pain.

It also flushed windows live mail where I had Yahoo accounts set up.

Let the buyer beware. Especially if it is free!

Interesting I use Firefox for my browser and Thunderbird for my email and had no problems upgrading, everything came back as it was. Now this was from the original 10 to the new and improved free upgrade. Do you have a young family member who can help you? They might be able to find your original settings.

LOL.....Think us old geezers don't know much anything about 'puters?
FYI, my daily job grind is medical IT.
I take full responsibility in not doing a backup however feel that Microsoft deliberately makes it difficult in order to promote their new Edge browser. Wiping out the competitors data is a dirty way of doing business IMHO. Their was no indication that this would occur as I requested that all files and Apps be saved in the upgrade. A quick Google search shows I'm not the only one.

Did you do an Express install by any chance?
In order to protect my privacy I did a custom one and it now appears that it set Edge as the default browser effectively wiping out all Chrome settings. How do I know? I rebooted the puker and did it to me again until I was finally able to set the default. I also lost audio as it also decided to default to a "headphone" setting instead of the external speakers.

After extended consultations with our family computer guru (14 year old Grandson..lol) I used the "express" download and installation. He explained that if I used the "custom" setting,I had to do everything manually (recpie for disaster for this definitely non-guru). My computer did the entire process automatically, but,it took the better part of two hours to download and install. Once it did,Edge was the defualt browser. It was simple to switch it back to Google Chrome. I hope this helps.

Well, after another round of updates Windows 10 including Chrome is now back to what I'm accustomed to seeing.

I have been thinking of upgrading. Keep getting the Microsoft invite to upgrade. Those who now have it, what advantages do you see? I hate windows 8, how similar are they? I am one of those cranky old dinosaurs.

I'm on the fence as to whether to upgrade or not. I have downloaded Windows 10 onto a usb drive, but still haven't installed it. Everything I have read says to do the custom install so that you can opt out of some of the default privacy settings, but it appears that this can cause other headaches. Did you do something like this Impact?

I downloaded it a few months ago. No issues so far. I backed everything up before, just to be safe. All my documents, files etc were there.....
