Hey - I didn't start this - some guys made the comment that they were glad no Americans were in Cuba - I only wanted to point that they should look up history and see what America has done to preserve freedom around the world - and be glad that America is around -

Werner, the US has been able historically to grow its own food, sure. Their exports outpace their imports, but to be fair, the make up of those exports, vs. what they are importing is important. Export of raw goods, import of finished and processed goods. It doesn't necessarily mean they're "self reliant".

Neither does showing oil production vs. demand really indicate self sufficiency either. It's their reserves, and their ability to exist without bringing in resources from outside their borders.

Just because they import things because its cheaper doesn't mean they are not self sufficient. Oil is a good example. They were producing enough (and were even exporting it). But with OPEC driving the price down to get the high cost producers out of the market (Canada,US), the US is shutting down rigs and importing. It's not that they aren't self sufficient - its just bad economics to burn more expensive domestic oil when you can burn imported Saudi oil cheaper.
