This is a standard shot shell, not an XR correct? Great video, and your point is taken about the wad obscuring most of what I was talking about seeing. I am just wondering about when/how that polymer fractures and disintegrates. This is purely out of interest.

I am not sure what you are referring to when you say "polymer fractures and disintegrates". The wad design that is used in the XR is similar to the wad design that is used in HEVI 13. The only difference is that one of them use a bottle cap like piece of plastic at the base of the shot cup and one of them uses a felt cap at the base of the shot cup. Both of these parts can be found on the ground about 30yds from where the shot was fired.

On XR, a polymer resin is poured into the shell prior to loading the shot. This solidifies around all the shot which holds it all together longer down the barrel. At some point if fractures, disintegrates, and then the wad does what it normally does out beyond the muzzle. The idea is that the shot scatters less, hence facilitating longer range shots. They call this Shot-Lok.

I would think that because the shot is riding inside a wad cup there would be minimum movement while it's moving thru the barrel, so I'm not sure that if there was a resin holding them that it would make difference...at least not until the wad cup is pulled away...once it's left the barrel.

The article states that the resin pulverizes into powder on firing, which occupies the space between pellets. This restricts their movement and reduces the number that deform (pancake). Does anyone buy this? Sales gimmick? Who knows. Are XR patterns tighter than some other brands in my testing - yes.

Leakyboots - well I'll be damned there is a resin in the shot cup that holds together the shot.
Attachment 32654
It is not a hard resin as it was breaking in my hand as I took apart the shell but it almost looked like it was a clear brittle resin.
Attachment 32655Attachment 32656
Here you can see the shot cup (the wad) and the piece of felt on the underside of the wad. Behind the felt patch was a plastic seal that kept the powder in the head of the shell.
Attachment 32657
With part of the wad shot cup removed you can see more of this resin - it goes all the way to the bottom of the wad and I might say the quality was very good (very consistent).
See....you lean a new thing every day!!

But does it do anything? The shot looks like it was pretty packed in there and little room for movement anyway.

Thanks so much for posting this John, kudos to your method and great results! I finally went out for the second time this past saturday and put some WIN Long Beard XL 3" #5s through my 535 and am finally happy with the results @ 30 yards. The second closest was Remington Nitro 3" #5 - which I'll go with when I'm out. I tried Hornady Heavy Magnum 3" #5 ...but not for anything past 20 yrds on the ground (just a mess with zero consistency).

(it's upside down because I stapled it on upside down
)
Cheers & Safe Hunting!

Good job on the dismantling. That was on my agenda for tomorrow, guess I don't have to do that now. Who am I kidding, I probably will do it anyway.
