#6 Lead
Would regular #6 lead shot have enough energy at 40 yards?
I've tried various turkey loads from #4-6 including the crazy expensive ones and aftermarket chokes. But the best pattern by far was from the super cheap Winchester Super X Heavy Load.

#6 lead should be fine to 40, as long as you don't misjudge the range. Sure #6 may throw better patterns out farther, some people fail to realize that a turkey neck/head is not made of paper.

I use only #6 and have never had a problem at 40 yards, once I pushed it to 43 yards and the bird dropped like a stone. That said, I prefer to hold off on the shot until the range is less than 30 yards. I only go to 40 if it looks as if the bird is going to walk away.
BTW I use 3 inch Winchester Supreme 1300 fps which would have more impact than the 2 3/4 inch you are considering.

Pattern your gun at different ranges to see what the pattern looks like. I try to keep my shots less than 30 yards but there are times when you have to make longer shots. I use 2 3/4 " shells #5 .
