Received this today:
[COLOR=#FF0000]Action Alert-Delta Opposes C-246
Delta Waterfowl is alerting its members to recently introduced animal cruelty legislation in Canada, Bill C-246. Delta Waterfowl has serious concerns over the legislation’s potential impact on hunting.
Bill C-246, the “Modernizing Animal Protections Act,” was introduced Feb. 26 into the House of Commons as a law to ban importation of shark fins. However, the proposed legislation also would change important legal language regarding treatment of all animals. The Bill does not specifically exempt accepted practices associated with hunting, fishing and trapping. Further, it doesn’t provide protection for ranchers and other uses of animals.
“This is a bad piece of legislation,” states Jim Fisher, Delta Waterfowl’s director of conservation policy. “The definitions of animal cruelty in C-246 are so broad that hunters, anglers, ranchers and others could be prosecuted for their normal activities. We can’t stand by and watch this attack on hunting, fishing, animal agriculture and other legitimate animal use.”
Delta Waterfowl is asking our members to contact their Members of Parliament and express their concerns over C-246.

Sounds like the Governemt wants to kill the bill...
I'll cut right to the chase: Canada is failing its animals, and it is time for change. Given the chance to modernize the out-dated and woefully inadequate animal cruelty provisions in the Criminal Code of Canada
13 times over the past
16 years, our lawmakers have consistently declined to protect animals.
Yesterday during the first hour of debate for Bill C-246 in the House of Commons, Bill Blair, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice, said without a hint of irony that the Government of Canada would like to kill Bill C-246 in favour of studying animal cruelty amendments as part of a larger review of the whole Criminal Code.
Actually a good pro/con summary in the article, worth the read;

They did NOT drink Kool-aid. The correct drink/brand was called fresh aid. A cheaper knock off brand, and the media messed it up by saying kool-aid.
Take the warning labels off. Darwin will solve the problem.

Since the Liberals only received 32% of the popular vote, it's was far less than a majority....and a large percentage of them only voted "anything but Harper", never understanding the damage they were doing by voting Liberal.
I think there has been a lot of 'buyer's remorse'....so not to many believing in "Sunny Ways" anymore.

Actually the shiny poney is still riding high in the polls and would still win a majority today. Which proves that maybe PET was right and that voters are stupid?
I’m suspicious of people who don't like dogs, but I trust a dog who doesn't like a person.

Update;
If anyone is interested in this topic....the author of the bill has published a blog on the way forward;
My Animal Cruelty Bill Was Defeated -- Here's What's Next
Bill C-246 was built on past Liberal government efforts, and it was endorsed by many organizations, including the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science, the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, all major animal welfare organizations across North America, SPCAs across the country, the Toronto Star, and even Don Cherry.
Unfortunately, it was actively opposed by others. For example, the Chicken Farmers of Canada, the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture piggybacked on concerns raised by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, and lobbied aggressively against the bill.
Our government and my caucus colleagues care about ending animal cruelty, but in the face of this vocal opposition, the government determined that more consultation was required to reach consensus on this particular piece of legislation.
