Default Buying Moose Meat in Ontario

I was driving along the highway today and pulled over at a store to get a drink. I walked past the cooler looking for pop and there were packages of frozen moose meat for sale (reasonable price too). At first I was shocked and then it occurred to me I was on a First Nation Territory.

As a non-Native can I purchase the meat legally? I am thinking you can because they also had bags of walleye fillets for sale and you often see local walleye (pickerel) that are gill netted for sale at restaurants.

    Just wondering ?

If you keep doing what you've always done. You'll keep getting what you've always got!

The MNRF allow outfitters to sell tags to clients so selling moose meat in stores is much the same.

I agree but I am just asking if a non-Native can legally go purchase it - that is all. Not saying I am buying it but there is obviously a market for it.

    Foxx - Point well taken.

fratri - I don't know this is the first time I have seen it so this is the reason I am asking. It must be legal or the MNRF would be all over it.

Maybe fine while on the reservation..but once your back into Ont, you will be in possession of 'wild' meat. If it was gifted to you, you don't have to register it but in this case you purchased it.

I wonder if that contravenes any MNRF laws ?

    Good questions....MH...

You can buy moose meat ( especially stew) in many restaurants in Newfoundland.
