    Had started a post on Tohatsu . Now that I'm 90% convinced to go ETEC I'd like to start this thread under the ETEC title to get opinions on a 30HP ETEC tiller 2017 model?

    A buddy has owned a 50hp etec for a couple years and loves it. He had gone through a few different comparable motors, both 2 and 4 stroke, and says this is his favorite by far.

    Ya I'm not hearing much middle ground talk like other motors. It's kinda like the Sam Adams beer commercial. "THOSE WHO LIKE IT LIKE IT A LOT" The others hate em. I want to hear the hate issues so I can either avoid or perhaps compensate

    Your asking a Ford or Chevy question? Most guys that hate them have never run or had a friend of a friend who had an issue. I've owned 3 etecs now in varying horse power as I upgraded my boats. Great motors. The key is that you get it setup at a "certified" Etec dealer, run the correct oil that it is setup for a do the required maintenance as you would any outboard. They are great motors, as are mercs and yammies these days. If you will running it in late fall with cold temps have it setup to run the XD100 oil. If not with that horsepower you are good with XD50. These motors are so easy to self winterize, have great low end torque, and just purr along. And lighter than a 4 stroke, better emissions and gas mileage. You will loose the gas mileage advantage with the oil but will save on the big year end services a 4 stroke requires. You'll be happy with it hours you go with an Etec. I'm just a regular consumer and user of etecs and have enjoyed them since 2007.

    I like to believe that I'm not completely ignorant about motors etc. (having been a licensed mechanic) ; I bought an E-TEC and LOVE IT ! --- The "nay-sayers" generally don't know what they are talking about . Most of them are repeating hear-say without having any personal experience . --- Even some so-called technicians (they are not mechanics) bad-mouth them because they lack the proper training and consequently can't "handle" them . --- Confer with any knowledgeable mechanic (or tech.) and let them advise you . --- I've owned a number of different outboards during the last 6 decades and admit to having been a bit apprehensive about all this new electronic "crap" ; however , after researching and talking to a myriad of owners and "techs." I'm confident to have made the right choice . --- Since June I used it ~ 70 hrs. (8 hrs. today) . It's by far the best outboard I've ever owned (actually all of them were good) .

    I bought a 60 hp ETEC in 2006. No problems with it. Fires up every spring with a touch of a key.

    Because E-TEC owners generally fall into one of two groups. Those who have already had to be towed back to shore, and those who will.

    Not really. Two stroke oil injected made in USA is somewhat different than 4 stroke made over seas. A bit more diff there than chev <>Ford

    I don't get that though. Things that are 100% flop don't hang around for as long as these have and as far as oil injecting. We've been having success in snowmobiles with that since forever. And we put them through far more torchure

    I guess I'm still waiting, been 7 years though with nary a problem and minimal maintenance costs. Looking to repower with a 60 ETEC HO when they're available. Proctor's in Simcoe have been rock solid with any set-up, maintenance and service/advice. Doug Heighington has a lot of years of experience and favours the ETEC's even though their Crestliners come with Mercury 4's in the package
