    Default Afternoon on Rainy Lake

I spent the long weekend at the Nugold mine about 60km NW of Fort Frances doing service work at the water treatment plant. Most of the time was spent working but I did manage to sneak out for an afternoon on the water with another contractor who had a boat. We spent the afternoon chasing walleye on Rainy Lake bottom bouncing dew worms in about 25 feet of water.

In the 3 hours we fished we tied into over 20 walleyes, a few perch, a few crappie and one muskie. Out of the 20+ walleye only one met the slot requirement. Most of the others were little guys and one was over the slot. The muskie was maybe 34 or 35 inches. Not sure on an exact length as I did not bring him into the boat as we had no desire to stress him any more than was necessary. My partner managed to unhook him with the needlenose pliers from the side of the boat.

The muskie on 8lb mono with no leader:

The wilderness is not a stadium where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, it is the cathedral where I worship.

Nice country up there eh! Our camp is about a half hour or so from the mine. We have watched that thing progress from stakes in the ground to where it is now. I'll be there in Oct. and Nov. chasing deer...last year, opening weekend we fished Rainy, in 87 degree weather.....no shortage of 'eyes !!!

I gotta get back to the northwest part of this province. Was there in 89 with a couple buddies and fished lake of the woods and we did ok for a couple of 19 year old wankers but would love to go back again someday.
