Shortly after first light. Ducks are starting right at first light as usual.
I love fishing but REALLY it is just a way to pass time until hunting season!!!!

Watch the birds on the roost, follow them to the field, ask permission on that field and you will have much better results! Like stated you have to be where they want to be. There are not a ton of birds around but definitely some good pockets of birds and we are gaining more daily.

As for this heat yeah it sucked but mostly for the hunter, the birds where still flying to fields to feed both morning and night. Better temps now, lets hope it stays this way.

Good luck the rest of the season!
True words of wisdom. Planning and scouting time is more important than hunting itself. If I have the option to spend a Saturday shooting a random spot and hoping for birds, or scouting, then I'm filling up the gas tank.

Hopefully we'll have yet another pile o' puddlers for the Central opener this Saturday!

Have to call bull on that one.
If you have 2 days in a row yes invest the first day to scouting for the next days hunt. If you got 1 day off in the week hunt away.

If I had only one day to hunt I personally would use my head, scout the morning and hunt the evening. If I didn't come up with anything on the morning scout then hunt the long shot field and be happy that you at least put in a good effort. Hunt smarter get better results!!

Naw just couldn't take your advice. Got out for a bit of a hunt this morning. Great day to be out. Got to the field early and took my time to set up good thing as the birds were eager to play today. Mostly likely the full moon was the reason the first flock was in the field at 6:00 am. All I could do was wait till 6:30 to shoe them out. Good movement till 9:00am than every thing shut down. Nice to be home for dinner.

Was out Saturday with some first timers and a couple guys up from TO. Was not bad till it started to raining, then we stood/sat around in the trailer for awhile till we decided to go for lunch. Chenzo 191 was happy to stay and watch over the decoys and gear while we where gone. I think he just wanted to play with the air rifle, cause he sure shot up my .22 spinner targets. How many tins of pellets did you go thru Vince? It must have been a couple, cause my poor .22 spinners where really shot up. Well after lunch with things still quiet, Mateo and soup headed back to TO. Yoki, Chenzo and I picked up and packed up the decoys and gear in about 30 to 40 minutes. We set out on a tour of Hullett to show the guys around and get us all a users guide...Ok I was checking the wild apple crop too. For anyone thinking of deer hunting in Zone B...the deer seem to be keeping the fallen apples cleaned up. Well driving around to Zone A I spotted a large Flock of Birds and since they guys were agreeable we stopped in the the farm house where they landed. After a nice chat with the owner and his wife, the three of us spent a couple hours trying to shoot some birds. I got a nice all white bird right off the bat, and then drop one that we could not recover because it was on a beam high on the wall. The cats will like that. Paul had a go at it and then Vince got one. All in all things turned out good. Got told to come back and hunt the place anytime.

    Summery of the day:

Got to hunt with four great guys
    took a short nap
got some practice in with the air rifle
    had a nice lunch
can back to find my spinner target shot up real bad
checked out the wild apple crop
Got a new permission for hunting
    Group shot three birds
showed Vince how to breast out birds( Paul got video he says)
    Drove home in the sunshine.

The setter stays home for geese mostly because they are not that hard to find once they hit the ground. The X is for the guys out scouting.

Only got a chance to head out solo, on an evening hunt with pouring rain. Decided to pack light and only took eight homemade plywood dekes, not very tempting to the larger flocks but a double and a single were curious enough for a shot/s... one witness made it out unscathed.

First off let me say congrats on a decent hunt FFF................ but you have got to be the only guy I know who would look down on scouting and actually putting the effort in to get results.....consistently! You had one decent hunt out of what 3 hunts?? Ever heard of the saying "even a blind squirrel finds a nut.......once in a while" ........keep beating that chest........u the man! (I'm almost positive you have posted that pic before......)

I had an amazing early season, lots of big piles of birds, some bonus bling but more importantly time spent out in the field with a bunch of great family and friends! My favorite hunt though was a solo hunt with my daughter, she got the morning off school on friday and we both had the time of our lives. I called home from work that night to ask the wife if she said anything about our morning hunt, her response was "she hasn't and won't stop talking about it". That put a huge smile on my face and gave me the pick up I needed to make the rest of my shift more enjoyable!

Congrats to all who got out, birds or no birds it's just great to get out and kick off another fall season!!

I'll share a couple pics of our hunt.

Enjoy the week off fella's, time put er in high gear in a week!!
