I wish I knew "why". I've tried everything. When I first got it, I could load three, 3.5 shells. Went out for early goose with forum member BBD. After shooting at some, when I tried to reload, I simply can not get Two, 3.5s in the tube. I to thought maybe the plug had shifted a few millimetres, Watched the guy at Stoeger put the dummies in and I was more than puzzled. As soon as I got home I tried my shells and nope....It's not the plug ( I think). It's flawless otherwise and don't plan to use 3.5s all the time. So combos or three 3.0s will the norm anyways.
Ranges:
so much depends on obliques and tradgectories but "generally". If they are flying on a dead line from one side to other. Once in a persons range. The first shot will be a few yards longer then the 2nd shot as it passes from Right to left or vice versa. Say from 9 0clock to 3. That middle shot will be the closest. If your comfortable at 30 yards when at "10" and that's the first shot, the next will be a few yards closer to centre straight out even though they may be starting to veer away and up.
likewise if they are on an oblique towards you. Say from 2 o'clock. Fast as they are their momentum will still carry them a couple yards closer after the first shot.
when coming from behind, say from 8 oclock. The second shot can be that little bit further. But on the whole I find the majority of shooting is more at birds passing laterally, or towards me initially.

3" #2 IMO is the best all around shell size...myself, I only hunt the odd goose that comes into my duck spread so I stick with 3"#3 for most of the season. The first week or two of the year I'll shoot 3" #4, dusted a goose triple last night hunting a woodie roost.

I shoot 3 inch #2 shot for everything. I don't pass shoot or take long reaches so it works out all season long. I don't bother with geese much anymore either so could probably drop down but #2 Remington sportsmans pattern good out of both my duck guns so why change.
