Hound Competition ??
Just wondering if there is any upcoming Hound dog competition in Ontario I could go watch? I'm interested in purchasing a hound so I would like to see the different breeds in action and meet with a breeder face to face. Also is there any courses on training hunting hound dogs?
Thanks
Dustin

Not for hunting but there are tracking tests for the purposes of recovering lost game, if you are interested contact the folks at Big Game Blood Trackers: http://biggamesearchon.com/
As you said, choosing the right breed for your purposes will be the major decision in what type of work you want it to do.

I am no expert but from what I hear Walkers make good coon dogs, they are very high energy and work in a pack as opposed to a bloodhound which is more independent.
I suggest you get more opinions from hunters/ breeders before making your decision.

The site for events is down. (Ontario Beagle Association) I hope it's not another sign of the times.
You might get some help here:

Treeing coon hounds are still a big event in Michigan.
I'll ask my American friends for a breeder /event recommendation if you'd like me to.

Walker's are very smart and learn quick. The most important thing to remember is that hounds live to run and it can be almost impossible to call them off a scent when they get going. They also require a lot of exercise. Most hound events are run in the states check out coondawg.com site for information.

walkers are very intelligent. Mine learned how to open the back door and lets himself in whenever he wants now.
also keen to pick up a trail and goes ape when small game is around, either treeing them or chasing them till they die.
i dont hunt him as i trained him as a pup to be a complete coward, but if i did want to put him through it, im sure he'd be worth his weight in gold.
highly recommend walkers man.
