Michigan M/L hunt

I have been invited to hunt the Michigan black-powder season since I still have my NR tag left over from archery.

Only issue is Michigan does not allow smokeless powder. What a dumb rule. How can they even tell what your using besides asking you to fire a shot..lol

I will try out the Black horn 209 & see if my savage 10ML II likes it...

Some states have weird laws I know some have no optics on your black powder.you must use open sights. Any way good luck wish I could come with.lol

Pyrodex should work:

"Pyrodex, though man-made and with a variety of additives, still has sulfur in it and is corrosive. It is classified as a smokeless powder by the DOT"

Interesting read. A couple of states (Mississippi and Louisiana) even allow single shot breech loading rifles in their "muzzle loading" seasons. A bit liberal. Some other quirks - some states allow powder pyrodex, but not pellets.

I'd guess about a quarter of the states prohibit smokeless powder during mz seasons, so MI's restriction is not that uncommon. As far as what powder you are using - aside from in the rifle, you likely are carrying some spare on you, and I think they would want to see that.

From reading MI outdoors forums, it looks like both pyrodex and pyrodex pellets are acceptable as "black powder substitutes".

I have Blackhorn 209 with 300 grains out of it, stuff is pricey. If you come up walkerton way let me know. $45 rather than $65 plus tax.

90-120 grains by volume should do nicely

Good news!!

I called the Michigan DNR & they have no restrictions that say I can't use smokeless powder. The enforcement officer gave me his name & badge number in case I get checked, he said to give them his contact info so he can set them straight...

The below info is what is in the Michigan hunting digest. The key words here are "commercially manufactured black powder substitute". This means any powder can be used as a substitute for real black powder. If it specifically called out smokeless powder then I would be SOL!!

Now I just need to see a buck with one antler longer than 3"... LOL
