For whom the bell tolls
Ever wonder when your dog locks up but there is no bird where it went?
Got Stella out for a work out today. Birds on the move as ran into some in at best some marginal habitat. Figure they are new arrivals as little splash was on the ground.
By the cadence of the bell I knew she was onto something but by the time I got the camera out she struck a pose. Got some video (ya its a bit blair witchy) proving woodcock are developing some grousey moves. Stella showed off a bit on the runner.

Heck 9 times out of ten I don't seem 'em either. Especially now it seems they will walk/run a bit more frequently.

I've never seen a pointer work before, she's so intense. Im amazed how tight that bird sits with you being so close for so long. I don't have any experience with woodcock, I've never even seen one first hand. If they sit that tight when you know they are there it's no wonder I I have never seen one while dogless.

Don't know anyone who hunts woodcock for the bird. I hunt 'em cause I love too see the dog work. Seems the bird was made to enjoy a pointer ( flusher if you are into that sort of thing)
Upland hunting with a dog is a whole other thing once done hard too do it dogless again.

Great fun isn't it? Of course the dog is saying "It's right there Buddy; it's right there!"
