Happy Early Thanksgiving… Well, to all turkey hunters anyway.

With the 25th of April falling on a Saturday, the spring turkey hunt in Ontario moves to April 27 this year. But before you pull out your gravy boats, carving knives, and grandma’s stuffing recipe, let’s see how prepared you are for the turkey season.

The turkey experts at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters worked with Ontario OUT of DOORS to put together a quiz to get you ready for the hunt. Have some fun with it and pass it along to your hunting (and non-hunting) buddies.

1. What is the safest position to be in while calling for turkey?

a. One that will not allow the turkey to see you.
b. A position that will allow you to jump up and shoot at a turkey.
c. A position with a structure or object wider than your shoulders and taller than your head behind you.
d. One with the sun at your back to make it more difficult for the turkey to see you.

2. When must you wear hunter orange when hunting wild turkey in the spring?

a. At all times.
b. While walking to or from your hunting location.
c. Only if hunting with a firearm.
d. Hunter orange is not required in the spring to hunt wild turkeys.

3. What is the safest way to carry a harvested turkey?

a. In a camouflage game vest or in a hunter orange bag.
b. By tying a long piece of rope around the bird and dragging it behind you.

ANSWERS:

1. A position with an object/structure behind you wider than your shoulders and taller than your head, such as a wide tree.

2. Hunter orange is not a legal requirement in the spring to hunt wild turkeys. Hunter orange is always recommended while walking to and from your hunting location, especially if you are carrying decoys or a harvested turkey. Hunter orange is, however, required for the fall wild turkey hunt if there is also an open gun hunt season for deer, moose, or elk (O. Reg 665/98 s. 26(1)Clause 26 (1)(a) of Ontario regulation 665/98)

3. It is recommended that hunters carry harvested birds in a camouflage hunting game vest or in a hunter orange bag.

4. Only shot sizes Number 4, 5 and/or 6 can be used while hunting wild turkey with a shotgun (O. Reg 665/98 s.79).

5. True. You can only party hunt for deer, moose, elk and bear. Hunters can only use their tag on a turkey they harvested (Subsection 22(1) of Ontario Regulations 665/98)

6. Only a bearded turkey can be harvested during the spring wild turkey hunt season. Bearded hens can be legally harvested in the spring, but it’s not recommended (O. Reg. 665/98 Clause s. 32(1)(a) of Ontario Regulations 665/98)

7. A hunter is eligible to apply for and possess no more than two wild turkey seals for the spring wild turkey hunt (O. Reg. 665/98 s. 33(1) Clause33(1)(a) of Ontario Regulations 665/98)

8. A hunter can only harvest up to one wild turkey per day (O. Reg. 665/98Subsection s. 33(6) of Ontario Regulation 665/98)

    Here is a question for the expert- After using both possible spring tags, can a hunter go with another and call for him( no firearm for the caller, just calling.) Thoughts? Anyone know for sure?
