Edouard Maurice made a brief appearance in court with his wife and young daughter on April 6, but the case was adjourned after defence attourney Tonii Roulston said she is awaiting more disclosure from the crown prosecutor’s office, including police notes and expert reports.
Maurice is next scheduled to appear in court on April 20 in Okotoks.
“The toll that these allegations have taken on Eddie and Jessie [Maurice] have been overwhelming. These people are hard workers. These people are contributors to this community,” said Roulston outside the courthouse. “These allegations with this family and their extended family have taken a toll. Not only on them but on the community.”
RCMP were called to Edouard Maurice’s property near Okotoks after reports of alleged gunshots after he saw an individual prowling his vehicles on Feb. 24. Two individuals fled the scene, with one suffering an arm injury due to the gunfire.
Maurice was charged with aggravated assault, pointing a firearm and careless use of a firearm.
Roulston said Maurice intends to plead not guilty and face a judge and jury trial.
