I'll suppose these folks aren't your 8 friends...Sorry to disappoint.
And this is just from what they could put on the NEWS...story on line include things like you can't order food in, guards keep you in your rooms, food is horrendous etc etc...all for $1000 for 3 nights.

Their choice to travel
Kept in rooms for sure. That's what quarantine means. The BS is not being able to order in food. The people I spoke with said when the hotel food wasn't acceptable they could order off the regular room service menu at extra charge (including booze) or order in and have it brought to their room.
As for the cost it's on them. They chose to ignore the government recommendations against travel and the government is taking action to keep non-essential leisure travellers from bringing back virus variants.
My only objection to the government program is that it came a year too late.
We really need an explanation on how the virus is so sophisticated that it can differentiate between an essential and non essential traveller.
Between someone attending church or someone shopping at Costco.
Between a peaceful protest and a BLM rally.
It can't. But essential workers are exactly as described, essential. Non-essential leisure travellers indulging their whims provide no benefit to broader society but present an equal risk of bringing back the virus.
The reason for the hotel quarantine might be that the first recorded instance of the British variant in Ontario came when a UK traveller visited his Canadian relatives over Christmas.
