Auctioning Taxidermy - Legal?

That doesn't mean it was legal....just that it was done.

Some are federally regulated (waterfowl for example, regulated by CWS) and most others are provincial. We cannot sell any native animals, but there are exceptions. Permits can be obtained for non profit sales, such as a DU dinner, but the paperwork is a PITA, so it is not usually done.

Fur bearing animals become possession because you pay for the royalty, therefore they can be sold, with the paperwork of course.

Any parts of the animals cannot be sold either ... apparently permits can be obtained to sell shed antlers, but you would be limited to how many you can sell.

Reproduction fish mounts are fair game to sell, there are no parts of the fish involved, it is just a big piece of fiberglass.

I see mounts for sale all the time on kijiji and other sites ... these ads are quite illegal and punishment is hefty, I don't suggest trying.

Taxidermy is a "service only" business, payment is for services, but animals cannot be mounted then sold by the taxidermist or the client after receiving it from the taxidermist, much of the public is not aware of this.

I remember a big stink several years ago about an old deer (I think) mount being sold in a yard sale in eastern Ontario. The MNR I think charged the seller & seized the mount. The media seemed to think the charge was frivolous. Probably unaware (as usual) of the regs about selling animal parts.

I was under the impression you could sell one bear hide per year. Can someone chime in on this please. Thanks John.

Yes, a licenced Hunter can sell their hides.

I believe it has to be a raw hide unless it was tanned after it was legally bought or sold.
