Those idiots don't have an original thought in their empty heads. They're going to rip off the Australian model and do whatever other add ins the UN tells him to do. We will be on the hook for engraving all our firearms with those UN numbers we've been putting off for all these years under our old conservative government.
Reality check: no indication the Liberals intend an Australian-style sweeping ban or buyback. And UN marking regs will apply only to firearms being imported, not all the guns already here.
Most significant realistic possibility is that the Liberals will essentially rubber-stamp what the RCMP wants and move the SKS, M-305 and so on to the restricted list; likewise anything chambered for .50 BMG. This would be right up their alley, given their tendency to treat RCMP wishlists as the advice of impartial experts.
I think those rifles that shoot pistol rounds and have high capacity pistol mags will bite the dust. Guys who shoot 3 gun events could be screwed. I wouldn't be surprised if all handguns get prohibited status. Pretty small group of lost votes. I agree the .50BMG could disappear. Scary looking and not a hunting tool. It's all about optics and fear mongering.
RCMP opinion on .50 Beowulf mag suggests dealing with magazine loopholes will be on their wishlist.
I don't think a general ban on handguns is likely.
I just sold a couple of semi-auto rifles. All I have left are three bolt rifles and two pump shotguns. Let the games begin.
My point is all they need to do is label a firearm as an "assault weapon" and that gives them the right to ban it in most of the misinformed public's opinion. The fact these rifles are only semi automatic and already have magazine restriction capacity laws on the books means nothing. The media is too happy to oblige and spread the hysteria and misinformation.
