Big cuts coming to Moose Tags???

"Rumors" are just that. Unless they're backed up with solid evidence,they're best ignored. Declining Moose population is happening across Canada. There's plenty of info by simply using Google. The trouble is that nobody knows why,but,that doesn't stop the finger pointing blame game which is about as helpful as "rumors." As long as aerial surveys are done properly and accurately,taking in a very vast area,if tag numbers need to be reduced,then,as ethical and honest hunters/conservationists,we have no choice but to accept the info at face value and agree.

I will bet you if the quotas are cut, the numbers will not change for 21A. The MNR are dead set on wiping the Moose out of that area for a handful of Caribou. I will never understand how they think.

It seems, based on this thread, that the less people understand, the more inclined they are to talk out their arse.

Let me pose a question to all the experts on "native relations";

There are 10,000 people living in Kapuskasing. There are <150 adult moose tags available within 50 miles of town. Over a 130 of them go to hunters who don't reside in Kap. That leaves adult 20 moose tags. Now, of the 10000 people living in Kap, how many travel by vehicle in and out of the bush every day. Minimum 1500. Now 1500 people with rifles and calf tags (no adult tag) traveling in and out of the bush every day over a 5 week season, how many get a crack at a calf over 5 weeks and get it loaded in the pickup on the way home from work:

Answer : 100's
Problem : not sustainable.

Wolves: not the problem
Natives: not the problem

Solution: Simple, lottery for calf tags. Problem fixed.

TR you will always see Moose along highways due to the salt and the ease of travel due to lack of snow. Moose are not to be or shouldn't be hunted along hwy's. And yes are hit be vehicles but this has always bee a factor along the roadways.

My understanding is the the FN hunters do report accurate harvest back to their band and council the number of animals taken (unlimited) each year.
The band inturn hands this harvest number over to the MNR biologist at the district office in their area.
MNR will use this figure aswell as the (regular) application hunters harvest number to determine tag alocations the following year.
It is in the best interest of the FN to provide accurate numbers so that the number of tags allocated do not harm the moose/deer populations in their treaty hunting area.



Is there no reporting structure in place currently? I don't know anything about treaties so I don't know what FN have to abide by each year in terms of moose and deer harvests. We are lucky enough to draw our one adult tag per year and even luckier to fill it.[/QUOTE]
