Yes, the No4 version of the SMLE.

SMLE stands for Short Magazine Lee Enfield, they started making them in 1907.

If you have a SMLE take a look at your fired brass, they actually bulge about 1/4in down from the rim, the chambers on these rifles are oversized. This way if you has dinged up ammunition or ammunition with crappy tolerances they could still be fired. This is one of the reasons the Ross was never reliable, the Canadian ammunition was very good and the british was not, therefore the poor british ammo caused failures in the ross rifles, that and mud.

So, SKS mags, yes they need to be pinned to 5rds but the SKS-D does allow you to use detachable mags. Another option is to get standard stripper clips that are 10 rounds and cut them down to have 5 round stripper clips, this is assuming you are not mounting a scope.

Not to get off topic...do a little google research. The detachable sks mags are not always reliable. I was looking into this myself awhile ago. Instead i got myself some extra stripper clips. I load up 5 or 6 clips with 10 rounds. Push 5 in. Shoot. Load the other 5. Shoot. Empty clip goes into pocket. Repeat. I dont really see much point in buying a 30 round detachable magazine if it has to be pinned to 5 rounds which is what you already have. But to each their own. Just research any magazine you are looking to buy as some are known to be problems. Good luck!

Just what WAS short about the LeeEnfield repeater? Or was it designed by Mr Short? Never did see a gun with a LONG magazine, nor one with a longer barrel .....:rolleyes:

"Short" didn't describe the magazine, it described the rifle which which was considerably shorter than the original Lee Enfield that came out in the 1890's.

That's your preference? I'd start using the stripper clips and then make your choice. Believe me. When you want to start firing that thing your gonna put a lot of rounds through it. Having to reload a clip is really a pain. I have 6 stripper clips and can put through 60 rounds in about a minute and a half. Do what you want but give this a try first. You'll be much happier.
