Veteran affairs estimate there are about 240,000 Veterans living in Ont…so if 50% of them took advantage of this program then the MNRF would be forfeiting a potential of about $360K to the SPA…. peanuts in the grander scheme of things, especially considering the significance of the gesture.
I find it’s a neat coincidence that’s about the same amount of Ontario taxpayer money the Ontario Government gives to the Pride Parade in Toronto…another community that the government supports, I guess some people might take offense to that too.
There are many others …. think of the potential income that is lost giving seniors a discount to take public transport.....

50% of 240,000 would be 120,000.
A one-year conservation licence is $36.08. Multiply that by 120,000 and you have $4.3 million.
Now, I doubt the hit is that big. The number you're looking for is how many veterans *currently* hold fishing licences, since opportunity costs are not really lost revenue. But that's beside the point, which is that you need to check your math.
As for senior's discounts, the premise here is that seniors are no longer employed and are on a fixed income. Not the same thing as extending a lifetime waiver of user fees to a guy who spent a year in a militia regiment.
