I don't think you'll find 30 million fisherman in Ont GW....
Considering the Ontario Government gave the Pride Toronto $300K for their parade....Free fishing for Vets isn't going to register with anyone watching the books....well maybe Welsh but then....

It has nothing to do with Pride. This is SPA money. It's a direct hit to the MNRF.

To look at it another way, if the Ontario government gave a %$*@ about veterans, they could fund mental health, employment, and housing services for veterans adjusting to civilian life, especially Afghanistan veterans at risk.
This is entirely within provincial powers and is sorely needed.
Instead, they have extended a symbolic benefit of negligible individual value to a large number of people, including those who are only veterans of the QM stores of reserve force Service Battalions. And the collective impact of that benefit on the SPA is important.
Tell me again how this is good policy. I need a laugh.

You're wrong.
While veterans' affairs is a federal mandate, health care delivery and housing are fully in the provincial wheelhouse. The province can fund mental health services and affordable housing for veterans.

I went to log on to apply for the card, this would require explanation:
"Please note that only applications from veterans released between February 2016 and September 2018 will be accepted for processing at this time."

Vets before 2016 will be able to apply for their card later this year.
Veteran affairs estimate there are about 240,000 Veterans living in Ont…so if 50% of them took advantage of this program then the MNRF would be forfeiting a potential of about $360K to the SPA…. peanuts in the grander scheme of things, especially considering the significance of the gesture.
I find it’s a neat coincidence that’s about the same amount of Ontario taxpayer money the Ontario Government gives to the Pride Parade in Toronto…another community that the government supports, I guess some people might take offense to that too.
There are many others …. think of the potential income that is lost giving seniors a discount to take public transport.....
Why say one is wasted money over another ?

50% of 240,000 would be 120,000.
A one-year conservation licence is $36.08. Multiply that by 120,000 and you have $4.3 million.
Now, I doubt the hit is that big. The number you're looking for is how many veterans *currently* hold fishing licences, since opportunity costs are not really lost revenue. But that's beside the point, which is that you need to check your math.
As for senior's discounts, the premise here is that seniors are no longer employed and are on a fixed income. Not the same thing as extending a lifetime waiver of user fees to a guy who spent a year in a militia regiment.
