I'm pretty sure (although I could be wrong) that's also the case with this outbreak, deaths are rare in otherwise healthy people. As was also the case with H1N1 and SARS. You'll always get the odd fatality in someone who seemed otherwise healthy. Usually when it's looked at more closely, these cases turn out to have had an underlying condition that they didn't know they had until they got sick with the virus and further complications ensued.
I'm of the opinion (and it's just an opinion), if it's going to be a big one, it will be something so virulent that half the world will be infected before it even has a name. There won't be time to quarantine and administer treatment. The world is actually long overdue for such a thing.
You absolutely have the right idea though, if it looks like the S has HTF, I'll be taking the family as far away from people as I can get.
