I would agree along those lines,too. The lady is usually right off the wall at the best of times,anyway. It would be prudent to not discount the idea,completely,because with some minor tweaks,this idea could gain legs in short order should the Liberals or the NDP form the next government.

This proposed bill would be a blessing! It would lift all restrictions on all guns. ;) Seriously though, there are a lot of really good points made in this thread. Welsh, you have the air of lawyerness about you, lol. I only fear that all these really great points just fall on deaf ears and don't get out to the people that need to hear them. We're obviously all into shooting and hunting if we're on this forum. I can't help but always feel like we're preaching to the choir.

Justin Trudeau has talked about the "need" to "reclassify firearms to make Canada safer".... think all semi-auto firearms (rifle or shotgun) in the same category as the AK-47....

and look at his comments on the changes to modernize the Authorization to Transport on C-42.

If the Liberals have a majority in the Commons, a Conservative-dominated Senate would be very unlikely to block any bill they passed ... it is very rare for the Senate to block a bill passed by the Commons for the simple reason that the Senate is well aware it is an unelected body.

When was the last time the Senate actually blocked government legislation?

The Coalition for Gun Control has not even mentioned this bill ... they're too busy making a fuss about Bill C-42, which apparently the Conservatives intend to squeeze through Parliament before the election.

It could be this is not a trial balloon, but simply the anti-gunners in the Liberal party trying to advance their agenda: trying to make an issue of it so the party will have to make a stand. Because despite what everyone likes to think, the Liberals won't try to make any serious gun control changes unless the polls tell them there's an advantage to be gained.

Which is what makes me wonder. "What exactly is the Senate doing?" I have though ya sure the sober second thought thing is a good thing...then someone mentioned (what I already knew) these are mostly patronage posts, (and what I hadn't considered) it isn't like they have any special knowledge of constitutional law or.....

It will be interesting to see how the Senate evolves after this massive body blow the auditor just tabled. The SCC pretty well clipped Harper's wings on reform without a full Constitutional review so other than being more transparent and less entitled there really isn't anything Trudough or Mulcair can do if and when they take power. Mulcair being the loudest critic ( easy to be with no dogs in the race) could find himself in a position to appoint Senators something he has ranted against. Would NDP Senators be any more honorable? Jack LAyton and Olivia Chow are on record of using the budget at Stornaway to live large. Not sure how Mulcair uses tax payer money?
