Don't be that guy that leaves everything to the last minute! April 25th will be here in no time. There is lots to do before the season so make sure you are ready to go.

- Re-confirm permission on all your farms
- Scout it and fix up your natural blinds and clear shooting lanes.
- Put out some cameras to see what the birds are doing (cell cameras are a bonus)
- Devise a plan to get to your spot especially if you are sitting in the middle of a wood lot.
- PATTERN your shotgun! I cringe when I hear people say it was on last season and I have not touched it since then.
- Tune your calls, and replace any that you lost or damaged the previous season - I am hard on mouth calls and strikers.
- Pack your vest and know where everything is in it.
- Practice your calling! Remember you want to sound like a turkey not a hunter trying to sound like a turkey.

I'll try to re-post my Patterning post from last year.

After hearing all the hype about this new turkey load I thought I would give it a try just to see how it performed in my set-up. Up until now I have tried several different turkey loads with varying results. Before I get into the results let me explain how I test each shell.

I first make sure my gun is zero'd in - I get up close & personal and use target loads to make sure I am punching out the bull of the target like a clean paper punch and then I back up to 20yds and throw a known performing turkey load at paper so make sure the pattern is evenly surrounding the center of the target - that verifies I am zero'd in on the target. My targets are standard 11x17 pieces of paper with a 10" circle around a bull (used only for centering the scope). I do this every year to make sure my scope has not been bumped or knocked out of alignment.

For my evaluation I shoot the same 3 shells at different distances (20, 30 & 40yds). What I am looking for is a consistent (and dense) pattern around the center of the target - you do not want holes or an inconsistent pattern. I only count the hits on the 40yd target because the 20 is usually a big jagged hole and the 30 is still too dense to count. The reason I count is because I want to make sure the pattern keeps its integrity out past 30yds and does not open or fall apart as the shot velocity diminishes - and it allows me to compare one shell to another. So my set up for these shell tests was a Benelli Super Nova Steady Grip with an Indian Creek Choke - like many beautiful ladies good ole Nelli has had some 'work' done to her - cones were lengthened, and I took some weight off the trigger and took some creep out of the trigger so she snaps nicely at just under 3lbs. I also use my Benelli AL391 26" bbl as a turkey gun every now and again and it uses the same choke as my Benelli Indian Creek 0.665

My present turkey load for my gun set-up is the infamous HEVI 13 (3" 2oz #6) - the reason why I say infamous is because the shells are $8/shell (USD) and are like hens teeth to fine up here in Canada, but there is a reason why they are $8 shell........these things are deadly!! I have seen lots of #4's and #5's and that illegal blend that BPS always markets this time of the year #5, #6, & #7.5, but the 2oz #6 seems to be rare, but for good reason. I am down to my last 7 shells and that was part of the reason why I am looking for options.

HEVI 13
I have tried a couple of different HEVI 13 shells and the 3" 2oz #6 patterned the best. I tied the 3" 1-3/4 oz #6 but the results were terrible! I was getting better patterns out of standard Winchester HV's but when I tried the 2oz load the results were amazing!! They have a very consistent pattern and since these are denser than lead they will be harder hitting then a standard copper plated lead shot. I have killed many turkeys with these shells and have taken some shots north of 50yds and they drop the birds in their tracks. Here are two targets I shot at 40yds with HEVI 13.......one had 162 hits and a very consistent pattern and one had 154 hits and you can see that I pulled the shot a bit........but is would still be one dead bird regardless.

Winchester Long Beard XR
As I mentioned earlier I have been hearing nothing but good things about the new(er) Winchester Long Beard so I decided to give it a whirl. I did no research on what shell to try so I went with my standard offering of a 3" #6 (1-3/4 oz). First thing I noticed was the way the hull was crimped - it looked like a solid piece of plastic with perforations where it would have been crimped. Probably waterproof but the overall quality of the shell looked very good. My 20yd shot was a ragged hole (which even a target load can do) but my 30yd shot showed lots of promise as the pattern was very dense and consistent around the center of the target. I went back to 40yds and threw a shell into Nelli and steadied for my shot and slowly squeezed the trigger and BOOOM. I racked the action sending the spent shell to my right and then I set the gun down and got up and walked towards the target. As I get closer the pattern comes into view and my exact words were WTF!! The pattern was amazing..........seriously it was really good! Anything in that 10" circle was simply dead. I set up another target and went back 40yds and loaded another shell and shot again - I wanted to make sure this was not a fluke. As I walked towards the target the second time I could see that identical peppering around that 10" circle. I was not overly impressed with Winchester loads before this but this time they nailed it - these XR's perform way better (at lease from a pattern point of view - I cannot talk about the downrange energy) than their Xtanded Range shell that I tried a couple of years back.

I tried the Winchester HV 3-1/2" #6 with decent results and the Winchester Xtended Range 3" #6 with very poor results. So I am glad to see they redeemed themselves with the XR!

Now.....what to do on the 25th........what shell to bring with me?? I think I will stick with my present set-up because I think there is something to be said about the higher downrange energy of the heavier than lead shot over standard copper plated lead. Now with only 7 shells left I feel comfortable that I now have a replacement that performs equally as well and costs a fraction of the cost.

No scope to muck about, no cameras to worry about, still got plenty of rem 3" #5's left known my equipment so good too go.
Was good enough to win last years contest should be good for this year too.

Try matching the Longbeard XR loads with a Carlson Longbeard XR choke. The pattern out at 50 yds is amazing...

Good thread...guys are busy and many forget to get their chit togehter before the last minute. :)

I'm waiting for the snow to clear the range and then I'll head out and get set up for both the 16 ga and ML (12ga).

I plan on getting the cameras out this weekend, I have a new flock in the front corner of the property that I'll need to pattern. The ones out back in the bush were there in the fall so I'm anticipated they'll still be there....but put a camera out and confirm.

Took the back roads the other day and lots of Tom's strutting in the fields already...not shortage of Turkeys in these parts.

The 20 has put up some impressive numbers out of the Mossberg 500 youth gun, a Carson unported .565 and a Styrka S5 1.75-5. Shooting 20 gauge Longbeard XR 3” #6s and this is at 40 yards. 133 in a 10”. All that said, with such a low velocity (1000fps) I wouldn’t shoot past 40 yards (maybe 45) due to lacking energy.

If only Ontario would get on board with these TSS #9s! Even with patterns like these, I’ll never carry a 12 gauge again.

will the bird behavior stay the same for the next month or so ?

my second year hunting turkey, have alot to learn. and I hunt mostly public crown.

I have a couple of spots with a good mix of trees and open area, and hicking early morning in the area, I always see a bird or two. but would this change in the coming months ?

hope the more experienced members here can share some tips for public land scouting and strategies as well.

goin to the farm tomorrow to look around and get some cameras up. :)

I use a Benelli Nova with a Hevi Shot extended choke, and always had great results with the Win X-Tended Range 3 1/2” shells in that choke.
However, when the Long Beard loads came out I switched to them in 3 1/2 “ #6, and they are amazing!! Since I just shoot w a bead site on the barrel I don’t have to worry about sight re-aligning each year either, which cuts shell costs/year!
i also have a Mossberg Bantam 20 gauge I got for my grandson to use, and the 3” Long Beard shells are great in it too, just not the reach of my 12 gauge.

I don’t think so as it warms up it greens up bugs will start turkeys. Will be going after them

I’ve been scouting their paths picking up moving branches. Surprising how much time they waste trying to get around fallen branchy branches

Good to go other than picking up some pads/butane cylinders for the Therma cell. Recently purchased a new shotgun and turkey choke so i will wring that out next week. Looking forward to opening day.

If you just want the butane cylinders go to CT and pick up the butane for hair curlers - they are the same ones! Over the years I always end up with more pads than butane!

went up to the farm today, little signs of turkey, still some snow and crust on the floor up there!

saw a herd of 10 deer, moved up to about 150 yards away to get a nice look with the binocs, couple of them looked pretty dark haired almost black, must be them running through the muddy swamp water maybe. lots of deer poop

LOTS OF CYOTE TRACKS AND POOP.

put up 2 cameras,

sighted in the crossbows,

got a few shots off with some turkey loads, looking pretty good. ran 7s/ 6s/ and 4s through the 870, very consistent, and pellets seem to have a nice spread.

If you hunt turkey late in the spring, and the mosquitoes come out, the Thermacell is a necessity!!
I never have a bug problem after I light it up...what a fantastic product for warm weather hunting!

John, what load are you looking to use for the 16 ga. I've been thinking to put mine into circulation for the spring.

With regards to hevi-13, i've given up on trying to find them. I've moved over to Winchester XR's No.6 in a 3.5". My 20 is shooting no.7 TSS with standard benelli full choke. If no.9s were legal here, I wouldn't bother with any other setup.

Kent used to make a Turkey load with #4 #5 #6 combo. I used in in my 870 for yrs, the beauty is that the mixed shot sizes compensating for each other at different ranges.

is a decoy necessary ? or can they be fooled with just calling ?

if yes, which I think is the case, what would be your first decoy ? a hen or a tom ? or other suggestions ?

No a decoy is not necessary. The consideration though is if your calling the birds they will be coming to you and will focus all their attention on the spot where the call is coming from. Almost impossible not to be picked off by the bird. I like a decoy to give them something to look at other than in my direction.
For that a realistic hen decoy ups your odds

Learned that early........I was yelping on a field edge with a jake decoy in the field. Had a gobbler come out of the bush and stop in his tracks and stared at my decoy for a couple of minutes and then high tailed it out of there. There is a reason why they become big old Tom's - they are not dumb. Great learning moment - LOL

I've had really good luck without a decoy on a number of occasions. Where this seems to work best is calling from a treed fence line between two fields with a gobbler out in front of you. Sometimes his curiosity gets the best of him and he just has to come over close to where I'm calling from to see if he can see the "hen" in the field behind me. Works great with a pop up blind.

Remember you do not always need to call in the Tom........a hen can help you get the job done as well. My early season field set up is 2 hens and a jake. A couple of times you will see a 4-6 birds cross your field and because hens are with the Tom's and/or Jakes they will usually not pay attention to your decoys. Usually the males will not leave the hens they are with. You have two choices.......wait for them to service them and start looking again or get that hen to come to you bringing those boys into range.

I have done this several times and it is cool to watch. Start cutting to get the boss hen to respond to your calls. When she does respond back to you copy her calls note for note and watch her get agitated. When she starts cutting even try to cut her off and send it back to her with an attitude and she might come over to give that hen a piece of her mind bringing boys into range. Just be careful because when they are in range because you now have 5-6 sets of eyes watching you.

I hunt without decoys 90% of the time.

I find that Toms are much less likely to hang up when there are no decoys used, as they have to come looking. You can throw calls back behind you to sound further away and pull that bird through. Trick is don't be calling to him when he can see your position, as you're just asking for him to pick you off. I almost always try to set up with some type of topography between me and the bird where as soon as he's in view he'll be in gun range. This will reduce the ability for him to pick you off as he won't be able to see you until the last second.

If I do run a decoy, it's always a single Jake -- I want that Tom looking for that hen.

Ha! Reminds me of a tom I was trying (and failed) to call in for a friend. With the tom hung up at about 70 yards, I kept pulling the hens in and the tom kept calling them right back. As this tug of war went back and forth, the tom's gobbles became increasingly louder and explosive. We could actually see the hens cover as he yelled at them. I now know what turkey profanity sounds like :D

Not to far from you, somewhere on Duffrin? You can hunt them just can't discharge firearms( bows included), often thought about sitting with a baseball bat.
That's turkey hunting there are no hard and fast rules that'll guarantee a bird. Some days you can do everything right and the bird wins others days you'll do everything wrong and still get the bird. Was kind of the story last spring for me still ended up with a couple of nice birds.

AGREED, last year the birds beat me and my dad big time lol. left us going crazy every time on the way home seeing a flock of like 15 in someone's backyard LOL, seen a bunch of hens last year for the spring hunt. the toms didnt want to budge from the neighbors property when they were there, seen a couple loners while walking the property but didnt have enough time to get the gun up as they were in the most unexpected times i would see them! it would be when i was walking on a field edge or something towards my dad and i would see one just over the crest of the topography of the field maybe 20 yards away, by the time i can tell its a male its already flopping and up in the air lol. hopefully this year is the year!

There is nothing illegal about that - photographers do it all the time to get a bird in nice and close for the shot (errrrrr.....photo).

I am an amateur photographer and often shoot deer in areas that are closed to hunting. I asked a CO about that exact same thing and photography of any wildlife is not considered harassment unless you are giving chase or interfering with their daily routine. Calling to a turkey or deer is doing neither of these.

Now busting a flock of turkeys in a quad or chasing a deer with your dogs will land you a fine but sitting in a blind with a camera will not.

I have a browning gold 12g 3" and factory full is all I need than again I like my shots under 40 yards. Most birds been taken under 30

870 rem improved cylinder #4 5 or 6, all on paper at about 40ish yards max, i dont think ill shoot beyond that, ive learned with deer too that i like to be closer to them, i dont like taking long shots, not that im not comfortable its just i like to hunt closer rather than father, more exciting for me i guess. id rather be in the bush scanning than scanning an open field.

makes sense, at 35 meters we had very good pattern, most pellets on the paper at least, but then at 50 it was too scattered.

Ya turkey killing is all about pellets in the head and neck. Pellets anywhere else just become teeth breakers.

You should try a full or extra full "turkey" choke. It will give you a better pattern at extended ranges. That being said, even with a turkey choke I'm hesitant to shoot past 40 yards.

Indian Creek has been good to me in my two Mossberg shotguns.
I did try many other chokes, Winchester long beard and the stock (Turkey) Mossberg were also pretty good.
yes 50 m is a long ways. I pattern at 30 and 40 yards.

My real question here is why are you shooting an improved cylinder choke for turkeys?

You've got one of the most popular shotguns in the world, and every manufacturer of turkey chokes makes one for it. A standard Carlson unported turkey choke will run you $35.

Yes do yourself a favor and pick up a turkey choke - night and day over even a factory full choke. They are not that expensive and it will really boost your confidence when it comes time to close the deal with that Tom!

Last year I got an extended mod choke for duck hunting, made a Huge difference I think. or as u mention, might have increased my confidence and in turn I was making better shots. Either way, another trip to cabelas is needed.

i just havent went to pick one up or look into it yet, only been going for turkey for 2 years now, 40 yards like i said my pellets are on paper. thanks for the input tho, might grab one this year, if not next.

this is interesting to me, my uncle uses improv gets a turkey every year, i apricate the input, as i said ive only been going for maybe 2 years now, still learning.

If you are hunting thick cover, where the turkey is coming in to 15 yards, then a looser choke is better.
However, for field hunters, usually the shots are much longer distances, and very tight chokes are needed!
i have often been forced to take 45 + yd shots because thats as close as they would come on the big, open bean fields on the family farm.

ah i see, we usually either hunt on fence lines or on a corn field on the bush line, someone else was telling me about hunting in the bush as they come closer, thought i might give that a try this year. well see i guess, i appreciate the input greatly!

You owe it to the bird to make sure you're using the most effective equipment for killing turkeys possible. Putting off a $30-$50 purchase makes zero sense.

Sure, people miss turkeys with tight chokes in close, but I'd much rather have a clean miss then put a few pellets into the lower neck or body and have the bird fly off and die elsewhere.

A good point of reference for killing density is at least 100 pellets in a 10" circle.

This is where knowing your shotgun and how it performs. A turkey choke will tighten the pattern and extend your range by enabling you to put more pellets in the head and neck. Pellets anywhere else is just peppering the meat. Granted the tighter the choke the less margin for error at close range as the pattern hasn't expanded.
A more open choke opens the pattern a little sooner giving you a little more margin for error but soon the pattern opens up to where again you're putting pellets in the body.
For me factory full is what I use as extended ranges I don't take. I Know the point of impact for my gun and can adjust accordingly for anywhere up close to out to 40 ish.

i have a after market rail on my gun that allows me to either look through my scope

or under my rail down the barrel and line my bead sight up like i would if i had no rail on it.


i had a red dot on my gun until recently actually. i enjoyed the red dot alot, the only problem was either forgeting to turn the sight on or off LOL as is was one of the TRU GLO red dots.

Well improved is okay however it would greatly reduce your options and you would really have to know your limits and abide by them. Fuller choke just extends those limits

For me a scope is a waste of money. Main thing with shooting is keeping proper form. Granted when you have a full strut tom taking an eternity to come over its hard to keep cheek to stock and eye down the barrel. You'd be surprised how easy eyes come off the bead and you end up staring at the whole bird. Been there and done that as a newbie resulting in shooting nothing but air. If you're prone to turkey fever a scope would help

Used to run a red dot, but had a few times where I forgot to turn the sight down and pulled up on a bird at first light only to have to move to turn the brightness back down. Burned me more than once.

Now running a Styrka S5 1.75-5 scope and will never look back.

No matter WHAT you bought, be sure to pattern it on paper, because every gun performs differently, and you may NOT get the best pattern with a particular choke, no matter what the choke manufacturer says. I bought 3 extended “turkey” chokes to try in my 12Ga Benelli Nova before I found one that actually gave me tighter patterns than the Full choke tube that came with the gun.
Then, you will also find you will get different patterns using the same choke with different brands of shells. My gun never patterned Federal shells very well, but the Winchester Long Beard loads give awesome patterns with it!

thanks alot !, when i bought this shotgun it only came with 1 choke. my dad has a 11-87 with 3 or 4 chokes so i think weve switched them out and about, i use my 870 for deer and turkey now so thats why ive switched to a scope i had laying around, i will be in the market hopefully for a lower magnification. the rail i have on my gun allows me to look down the bead sight so ill be using that for turkey hopefully. will be sighting in again when everything is mounted and ready.

Me too, no optics on the my 870; never found a need for a scope. My gun shoots where I place the bead. However what you described happened to my son on his first and only opportunity to-date; he shot clean over the tom's head.

You don't really need anything more than the red factory bead on your shotgun. I've had a few occasions where I've been impatient while watching jakes and thought a scope would have helped me see the beard a bit sooner, but I don't think it's ever cost me a shot at a bird.

I can't remember if we've gone over chairs in this thread, but being able to sit comfortably helps an awful lot. Invest in a good seat or cushion after your have your basics covered.

TSC/Peavy sell Fibre Optic sights that are cheap and easy to install..they work great.

CT has a really comfy Turkey chair, sits low and has good back support. It'll go on sale before the season opens for around $30.

I put an aftermarket HOODED bead sight on the front of my Benelli Nova, and you can’t see the bead unless your aligned properly down the barrel...raise your head off the barrel plane and the bead disappears. Bought it to Correct for off dominant eye, but it forces you to stay down on barrell also.

Even with a scope don't think it would of matter for this tom. Had to wait till he strutted to within yards off me to id the beard. The hard part was sitting still enough till he continued to stroll out to 20 yards.

If you use your gun only for turkey hunting get it drilled and tapped - you will not be disappointed. For turkey hunting I have used a red dot, holo sight, various fiber sights and a scope and have settled with the Burris 1-4 scope. It is bright and, very durable and does not rely on batteries. Drilling and mounting a rail is an easy job for an experienced gunsmith and will be more solid than a saddle mount.

I also made a dedicated deer slugger - Beretta AL391 with a 26" bbl and a 24" cantilever rifle slug bbl. I have a cheap 1.75-4x 32mm Bushnell Trophy shotgun scope mounted on it right now. I am thinking of taking the gun in to get drilled/tapped and adding a rail and then cutting off the cantilever scope mount off the barrel and then take my Vortex Viper PST 1-4 off my AR and mount it on my 391.

A red dot, nor any other sight will help with wingshooting. The best "sight" for wingshooting is a simple unassuming bead at the end of your barrel.

I was out this morning checking turkey movements . Seen more deer on my property than any time in the past. Watch 6 deer eating out in hay field just a pigging out watched them for 20 minutes with 3 turkeys

By the way deer don’t care. They know it’s no were near their season

I find it funny to watch a bunch of deer standing on bluff watching fishing tugs pull in nets

question; my regular spot around Owen Sound isn't showing much promise this year, the owner hasn't seen much sign this spring so I thought I might try further north. My bear spot is up in Gowganda and I don't expect them to be that far north but can anyone give me an idea about how far north that Turkeys have migrated? I have another spot that might have some promise around South River and plan to scout that area out. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Yep, South River is WMU48 & WMU50 (depending on what side of Chemical Road you are on). I checked the regs and there is a spring turkey hunt for WMU46-50 so you are good to go.

a friend of mine has a cottage up there and Ive seen turkeys while driving around there.

But as a general question :

if there is turkey season for an area, can we make the assumption that there is a good turkey population in the area ?
now if there is also fall season in that area, can we assume the population is higher and more stable in those areas ?
