Thanks for the reminder. Forgot all about that
can anyone teach me how the additional deer tags work ?
I applied for wmu 60, still pending.
Id like to also apply for a controlled hunt. which is still not open.
I also found a new hunting ground, with good deer population in another WMU, which I didnt apply for.
but cant understand what additional deer tag is, as I see a limited selection on it as well.
Ata83 for an additional deer tag all you need to do is apply to the WMU that is offering the additional tags by first buying the additional deer tag and then entering the hunt code associated with the unit that offers an additional tag which is found in surplus tags. I hope this helps you out. Ken
ohhh ok I got it now.
I assume thats the list : https://www.ontario.ca/page/apply-fo...ional-deer-tag
thank you for your help, looks to be mostly in northern Ontario.
Ata83 yes that is the list and there are quite a few surplus tags available in the southern portion too. Ken
I don’t get 82a. They have additional doe tags but for archery only. What difference does it make what way I harvest the deer? Can anyone make sense of this?
No additional tags for my main hunting WMU but bought one for my secondary WMU choice. Its a little further drive (35 minutes) but does have a lot of deer in the area. Best of luck to all
I got one do you print a tag at checkout. Or just updates summary
I'm not sure when the last time was that there were extra rifle tags for 82A. I thought they've been cut out for a few years. The odds are less for harvesting a deer with archery equipment than with a rifle so they are saving a few animals. I don't miss the extra rifle tags in 82A as much as I miss the extra tags we used to get for the controlled hunt. Then I always had a tag waiting for the late season shotgun hunt.
sigh... another year with no additionals in 89
Last time i remember extra rifle tags in 82a was 2011ish. Think we were getting 2 extras each and one of those was an anything goes tag and one was archery. Than was a year or two with no extras and than the last bunch of years it's been one antlerless archery.
i hunt 81A, i guess they dont give out additional bow tags for that wmu? is it because its only a controlled hunt in that wmu? someone explain
i hate being confused about this grrr
I don't think it is because of the control hunt, it is to manage the herd. I am sure they have an archery hunt in your WMU too, there just might not be enough deer (according to MNRF) to allow additional deer tags in that area. Additional tags are to help control (manage) the deer population. With that being said, not sure how they come up with their numbers. In my home area, there are a lot of deer yet no additional tags, seems out of whack to me.
its interesting though, why release left over tags, when the original draw hasnt finished yet ?! or maybe it has and just not released yet ?
if I am successfull on the controlled deer hunt, and also the wmu I choose on the deer draw, both tags would be printed on same tag I was told, so I can only one use.... does this second tag mean a separate physical tag ?
sorry for all the newb questions. not trying to take more deer [dont have the skills and appetite lol ] just trying to understand the process and increase my chances.
Additional tags are indeed separate seals for additional deer.
No worries about the confusion, additional seals are a relatively new thing to those of us who hunted back when there was no such thing.
There is a separate draw run later than the antlerless deer draw. Some are antlerless only tags, some are buck only, some are either depending on WMU. In some WMU's you can buy multiple additional seals. Usually the draw is opened for your first additional seal application, then any remaining seals are sold first come first served basis after the draw is over.
So yes, separate draw than the controlled hunt and antlerless draw, separate additional seal. Do not confuse with controlled hunt draws, which are not additional seals, "controlled" just allows you to hunt during a specific period with your main deer tag. Hunter numbers are "controlled".
One thing that really confuses people about additional seals is the MNRF can be a couple to a few years behind in responding to what is actually happening in a particular WMU. Meaning you could have lots of extra deer around and no additional seals available or vice versa.

Being successful in a controlled hunt, does not give you an additional tag. You only get one tag with a deer licence. Controlled, means hunter numbers are controlled, not deer. If your WMU has additional tags, you can buy the number of tags allowed per hunter.
Edit: GW11 beat me to it !!
Thank you guys, much more clear now.
What a bummer, there's tons of deer in 81, ( where I hunt anyways).
So just to clarify, If I'm successful i drawing for my regular tag for 82a and then my controlled hunt for 81a if I dont tag a deer on my controlled hunt, I can go for bow after for buck only in 81a correct ?

No-there is no draw in 82A for regular tag.Only draw for antlerless add on.
Your main tag is buck-one buck anywhere, any legal arms,in any specified season(except where Controlled deer is the rule for shotgun-muzzleloader).There, You have a choice of only ONE WMU-one season for firearm( pre specified firearm )to hunt with,as well.
But-you must apply for Controlled hunt ,and be drawn.Did not apply-or did not get drawn=no validation tag .No Controlled hunt allowed on Your tag then. You can NOT even Party hunt in Controlled. Yet-even there you can buck hunt archery,in archery season.
Then-You need to apply for Antlerless deer-one WMU of Your choice, arm of MNRF choice- validation goes onto Your Main tag.
Using Your main tag-bow buck, rifle buck, controlled deer or antlerless-Your tag is done.
If You go for additional deer tag in WMU of Your choice -sex,season,WMU and arm is specified by MNRF. No exception. You buy it-if available. You can have up to 6 Additional tags in Ontario.
You are done using up your tag-tags. Whatever was it -whenever you score.
Of course-you can still party hunt with others,on their tag-BUT only under conditions for their tag.
You can even Controlled deer Party hunt with them-if they have a Cont.Deer tag-and You applied and were drawn for Cont Deer.BUT-both of you are same WMU specific.Must both have Cont Deer for the WMU You are to hunt in.
Great expalantion GW11 - but i belive Additional Deer tags are-first come, first served. No draw.
There is also 3 "run"at them:
First-from July 8-everyone can buy one.
Second(from Jul15)-everyone can buy as many as they want-up to 6 per person. ( 6 Does not include the main tag.)All for themselves(but it is WMU specific for personal limit of these tags).
Then-from August 17-"free "for all, still up to 6 Add on Deer tags per person. And -whatever Add on Deer tags a WMU allows per person.
6 tags is crazy decimate a herd in area
Not in one WMU-but one hunter can have up to 6+1 in the whole of Ontario(if and where available).
I think lately max 3 is available in one WMU (main +2 additional).
Only exception are 79 C and D,there one can have 1main+2 add on archery+2 controlled hunt add on.....which is puzzling to me !
81A is controlled deer hunt only. but with 99% success rate I believe. so to hunt deer, you have to apply controller dear, and can take the sex mentioned on the tag with the firearm mentioned.
if no controlled deer hunt, you can use the buck tag to hunt any firarm season till tag is used.
same tag will be used for your controlled dear. so if u are successfull on control deer draw, but shoot one in another WMU before the controlled deer hunt starts, ure done and have used up your tag.
