I'm not sure when the last time was that there were extra rifle tags for 82A. I thought they've been cut out for a few years. The odds are less for harvesting a deer with archery equipment than with a rifle so they are saving a few animals. I don't miss the extra rifle tags in 82A as much as I miss the extra tags we used to get for the controlled hunt. Then I always had a tag waiting for the late season shotgun hunt.

I hope this helps you out. Ken
Good explanation-but they are not surplus tags! They are just Additionally available tags.

Last time i remember extra rifle tags in 82a was 2011ish. Think we were getting 2 extras each and one of those was an anything goes tag and one was archery. Than was a year or two with no extras and than the last bunch of years it's been one antlerless archery.

I don't think it is because of the control hunt, it is to manage the herd. I am sure they have an archery hunt in your WMU too, there just might not be enough deer (according to MNRF) to allow additional deer tags in that area. Additional tags are to help control (manage) the deer population. With that being said, not sure how they come up with their numbers. In my home area, there are a lot of deer yet no additional tags, seems out of whack to me.

its interesting though, why release left over tags, when the original draw hasnt finished yet ?! or maybe it has and just not released yet ?

if I am successfull on the controlled deer hunt, and also the wmu I choose on the deer draw, both tags would be printed on same tag I was told, so I can only one use.... does this second tag mean a separate physical tag ?

sorry for all the newb questions. not trying to take more deer [dont have the skills and appetite lol ] just trying to understand the process and increase my chances.

Additional tags are indeed separate seals for additional deer.

No worries about the confusion, additional seals are a relatively new thing to those of us who hunted back when there was no such thing.

There is a separate draw run later than the antlerless deer draw. Some are antlerless only tags, some are buck only, some are either depending on WMU. In some WMU's you can buy multiple additional seals. Usually the draw is opened for your first additional seal application, then any remaining seals are sold first come first served basis after the draw is over.

So yes, separate draw than the controlled hunt and antlerless draw, separate additional seal. Do not confuse with controlled hunt draws, which are not additional seals, "controlled" just allows you to hunt during a specific period with your main deer tag. Hunter numbers are "controlled".

One thing that really confuses people about additional seals is the MNRF can be a couple to a few years behind in responding to what is actually happening in a particular WMU. Meaning you could have lots of extra deer around and no additional seals available or vice versa.
