Yup, with no end in sight. I couldn't justify spending that much on a xbow but it seems there's a market for them. I'll stick with my micro too.

Just because it doesn’t have a barrel doesn’t mean that they can’t classify it as a firearm if they choose!
500 FPS is a benchmark for regulatory purposes, dealing with registration , Licensing etc. A pellet gun, well under the 500 FPS, is still a “firearm” as defined by the CCC.Quote:

No barrel means it is not a firearm no matter how fast the arrow speed is. It may meet every other criteria but without a barrel it is a non-starter. They would have to amend the legal federal definition or pass new laws specifically aimed at crossbows.

And thats my point - because a crossbow NOW has attained the 500 fps benchmark, they will probably require a PAL for ownership!
Have you all forgotten that crossbows were ORIGINALLY listed on the licences back in 1994, but never enacted into law … well, with this one now on the market, it might very well happen.
If they can declare a .22 LR rimfire to be a prohibited weapon just based on looks, they can easily change their firearms definition.
It definetely is a slippery slope.
Ive been pretty vocal in defense of crossbow hunting and how they are a great tool to introduce new hunters into the sport, but with these speeds increasing the way they are perhaps these newer faster bows will be lumped into firearms seasons instead of bow seasons...
Personally I wish companies stuck to making lighter and easier to de-c*ck rather than focus on increasing speeds...within 30 yards the tried and trie excal 300FPS crossbows kill them just as dead as these new crazy fast bows..
I agree. I ordered an assassin 420 TD last week for a buddy who was away when it came on sale. That thing is a beast. Easily 2-3 pounds heavier than my Matrix 380 xtra. I like some of the features on it, the new trigger, adjustable stock for warmer and colder temps when you may be bundled up more, and the cocking mechanism. Not a fan of the tact 100 scope on it and the weight is a deal breaker. The price on some of these new xbows doesn't really shock me. If I'm spending 2 grand or more on a rifle and scope to hunt 1 or 2 weeks out of the year, why wouldn't I spend the same on a xbow to hunt for 3 months.Quote:

I agree, there seems to be no end to the "speed" marketing on these newer crossbows, and the price is getting way out of reach for most.

Yep, I have an Exocet as well. Up to 330fps with optional Flemish string. Plenty accurate up to 40 yds is fine by me. Sure it would be nice to have a smaller and faster micro but I'm still happy enough to hunt deer with it and know I won't be tempted to take longer shots like some are with faster bows because they can hit targets at 60+ yards.Quote:

Honestly from what I've seen crossbows that get up that high in velocity are very unreliable and unpractical for hunting. Same nonsense as the Excal Twinstrike. Heavy, unreliable nonsense.
I have a ravin r10. Its very small, shoots 400fps and it is defiantly more accurate then any crossbow at moose camp this year, I shot a bull at 50 yards with a G5 dead meat expandable, Couldn't have asked for better results,
My Compound with probably never be taken out of the case at moose camp again.
More speed as long as it is accurate on big game like a moose is a good thing.
All my buddies and family have faster crossbows than my excalibur Phoenix at around 305 fps, I was just debating upgrading to a faster bow last week even though mine shoots excellent groups, than Sunday morning came and the Phoenix came through double lung pass through on a good size spike buck, no point spending $1000 bucks plus this year. If I do upgrade one say I will be keeping the Phoenix as a back up or for my kids when they are older. Doesn't matter how fast , shot placement is key , although I wouldn't shoot out to 60 yards with it as I see some guys do with the faster bows.
Not for me either, but apparently there are enough who want and can afford the newest, fastest, coolest looking one to justify the manufacturers building them.
same arguements centuries ago with the people who said my flintlock kills the deer just as dead as that new fangled cartridge gun.
To each their own, if it drives the economy and gets people out in the woods who support hunting I'm OK with it. You still need to do your part to get game in your sights no matter how much you spend on equipment.
I guess it boils down to personal preference
I'm a compound shooter and there's lots of bows cheaper and faster than my Mathews but I like that bow the best.
After being around guys with Ravens I can honestly say they are by far the nicest crossbow made. fit and finish is perfect and there's not a cheaply made part on them
