Hey, is anyone doing tail fan mounts from their birds?
It looks pretty straight forward. Any tricks to know about?

Hi Markster, just make sure you remove as much fat and flesh as possible without damaging the feathers and put a lot of borax to cure what's left. leave plenty of back feathers so you can trim as needed to the look you want, also pin the tail in the open position on a sheet of heavy cardboard or plywood and leave in a cool dry place to cure. Don't forget Google has a ton of info also.
Trim as much flesh off of the tail piece you cut off. Open the fan to 180 degrees, use the 3 nail method on a piece of wood to hold the fan open, borax the crap out of the flesh that is left over and let it dry out. It will hold its shape once the flesh has dried. I have done this method a bunch and it works well.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ea627485b4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...79064c5bac.jpg

Thanks for the info guys.
I bought one of those 3 beard mounts and traced the design onto 1/8 inch hardboard for the next one.
Its ok quality, but not great if you know what i mean.
If anyone is interested , i have the tools to make a few extra.
Just let me know.
I have some cherry, white oak, red oak and pine around.
If i’m going to make 1 i might as well make 5.
If you want to do something different with the spurs, cut them off the leg bone, just above and below the spur. Clean off all the leg skin and clean bone marrow. Put borax on them. Next get about a 18 inches of leather shoe lace, make a loop. Feed each end of the loop through the spur, where the bone marrow was, one on each side of your loop. Feed them up a few inches, have the spurs point the same direction. Now cut off the brass of the shell you used. Push out the primer. Push both ends of the leather loop, through the primer hole about half way in. Now, take the beard, ensure it’s free of meat, skin etc., and has been Boraxed for a few hours. Fill the brass with hot glue and press the beard into the glue and brass shell end. It ends up like a necklace of sorts….
Hey Rick, would you have a picture of the way you did the spurs and beard
Everyone summed it up already. I try different things all the time. The last thing I tried was cutting a natural piece of wood and I transferred the picture of the moment into the wood and mounted the tail fan and beard to it. Where are you located
Another trick for the spurs is after you cut them off and remove the hide over the bone is to clear out the bone marrow with a Q tip then put about a 1 inch of Javex in a butter container place the spurs in the javelin keeping just in bone in the bleach.Give it about a week and the bone will be very white and the spur looks sharp.Put a piece of 1stand of copper put your spurs on the copper then solder it together then hang it on a hook on the fan mount along with the the cut off shotgun shell looks sharp.
I do the Spurs like Rick, and just thread them on a bootlace. I keep the shell, pick out the primer and make a hanging loop, then roll up my tag and put it in the shell casing, and tuck the borax dried end of the beard in the open end of the casing, and hang them up with the fan mount. I’ll try to grab a pick and post it up.
That mount looks great trky chsr.
Here is a pic of my first tom's fan, and the beards and spurs from the rest since.
Every once in a while I threaten my wife or daughter that I am going to wear the necklace out with them!
Nice mounts guys!
Lenny, by the looks of those spurs you ‘ve taken a few turkeys!
Make sure to remove the oil glands at the base of the tail when cleaning up all the fat and meat from it.
I use course salt instead of borax.
And I use a clothes hanger with the clips on each side to hold the tail spread open. Then I can hang it to dry.
Wish I remembered how to post pictures. Lol
