243 is a barrel eater

Hey forum

was talking to a gun smith. Asking what's a good deer/ coyote rifle..

he said 270 and higher. When I asked him about 243 calibre he told me it was a barrel eater.

would need a new barrel in about 1500 rounds and if I used 120 grain then earlier?

then I asked him stailnless or blue moly barrel. He said stailnless heats up to fast the only great thing about it I will rust but not as fast as blued.he also said that stainless barrel slips in very fold temps..

What's getter stainless or blued and why?
any body hear this?

I would shop somewhere else. The .243 has never had the reputation of being a barrel eater. It would more than a 308 for example which uses the same case but nothing like some others that are overbored. Heat is what eats barrels. Just don't get it red hot and odds are you will never wear it out unless you shoot alot. As for stainless heating up too fast again I call BS. I think if you went to a bench rest competition you would be hard pressed to find a barrel that is not Stainless.

I call BS on everything ur smith told U, cuz U gotta do a lot of shootin if ur burnin out a barrel......any caliber

Good luck finding 120grain bullits for a 243. 100grain bullits are slower than 130g 270. Don't know what kind of BS the guy was feeding you. Buy a 243 find a 90-100 loads that your gun likes and use it for everything. Blued or stainless is a personnel preference, get what you like.

Hogwash. Pure hogwash. The pressures and heat generated by the .243 are mild to medium in comparison to many.

As a public service, perhaps you would be good enough to share the establishment that provided this "nugget" of information. They will be on my, and I'm sure a lot of other peoples "Do Not Go" list.

Go with the .270. You will then have a decent rifle that shoots 150grain loads if you decide to go for deer or moose.

So is the 22-250, high velocity and burn rate they say burns out barrels faster, than your average .308. No expert, but that is what I heard and it makes sense to me.

lightest factory ammo is 115 grain.

if you get into hand loading you can get 90 grain bullets for .270

Bit on the heavy side. But if someone asks which rifle I would recommend between the .243 and the .270 I'll recommend the .270 every time. As far as I'm concerned, and a good many gun authorities are as well, the .270 is the most versatile cartridge for North American game.

the .243 is a nice caliber, but somewhat limited in the size of game it will be effective for. If the You only ever wants to shoot yotes, then you can do a lot worse. But let's face it, very few of us who hunt, do so for one species only. The .243 has been argued as being a good baseline caliber for deer, but I'm not a big believer in minimums.

I would just hunt yotes with your deer load. Might as well get to know that load. So if shooting a 270 you can just use the 130 sight it in and be done with it. The coyotes won't be offended.

The 243 also harvests moose, elk and black bear year after year with great success. Any one who claims they are minimal for deer couldn't be more wrong.

Get a 3x9. Will cover deer and yotes. Redfield is a good buy as is Bushnell and Leupold.

Nuh Uh. Picked up some 100 gr .270 at Al's in Arnprior last fall

Do some research on plastic bolt shroud, pinned action(long action pinned to make a short action) plastic mag and bottom metal, etc.

Nothing too terribly wrong with any of the above other than the plastic bolt shroud, if a case turns loose.

Just be informed before you pay a "premium price" for a manufacturer's shortcuts.

PS... a .243 is enough for deer.

You want to take to the woods with a .243 for moose, or bear? Have at it. The ballistic coefficient of a 90 grain bullet from a .243 is not what I or many shooters would consider a big game getter. Muzzle 3100 energy 2027. Quickly drops past the 250 mark. The ability to penetrate is greatly compromised past 150 yards on larger game animals as well. If you're that good a shot out there in the field, that's great that you can hit a 12" square of a moving target every time, I'm quite impressed. I however would prefer to assume that even though I know exactly where my shot will go, I may not get a perfect one every time, and will shoot a heavier bullet to take that into account.

Many consider it a baseline round for deer. Alberta has it in their regs as such ( nothing below .23 cal).

How many big game animals are shot past 250yds here in Ontario?? Hell how many are shot past 150yds. It does not matter the size of a bullit, a bad shot is a bad shot, a well placed shot at 150 yds on any Ontario big game with a 243 equals liquified lungs, dead meat.

No argument.

Hope the moose stands still long enough to afford that "well placed shot", or the bear doesn't turn and cause the 90 grain bullet to glance off a shoulder bone, ( because everything sets up out in the field like it does on TV right?).

Is the .243 ok for deer? Sure. Is it a good go to round for other big game? That can easily be discussed here ad nauseum. My personal opinion is that if I went for a walk, and had a choice of a .243 or a .270, with the prospect of big game, the .270 will be the one I take.

The OP appears to be shopping for a 1st rifle. Why wouldn't he go for the .270?

I load with them. But in the context of this thread. A new shooter has asked for a good deer / coyote gun, between a .270 and a .243. He is obviously is on a budget. Hence the advice to go for the .270 which in the long run is a more versatile round. He doesn't hand load, and will be relegated to shooting factory ammo.

I do not argue that the .243 is a nice shooter. I even will stipulate that in the hands of an experienced shooter, it is a decent gun for larger game possibly. Let's not get into the long drawn out thread over ethics, since a .223 neck shot is good on deer as well.

if the OP is going to lay his money down, and wants a versatile shooter, why is the .270 a poor choice? Since it offers a better range of factory ammo offered, and in heavier bullet weights as well.

I shoot a .22WMR, but I'm a bit old school.

i think the .17 HMR is a dead sexy round. At 50 yards, I'd shoot it. The main issues with the .17HMR seem to be wind drift at longer shots. Not a concern at 50.

The likelihood that you may find a nice older .22WMR are good though. I bought an older Marlin Bolt action last year from a guy for $110.

It will kill them. Probably leave one heck of a hole in the hide though. Given that it's a round primarily designed for mule deer, elk, bear etc it's a bit overkill. But it depends if you are after hides or not.

Excellent advice. If you only want to own one rifle at this point, the. 270 will let you hunt yotes to moose. The. 243 is not a reasonable moose round even if it can do it under optimal conditions. Have a bit of respect for the game. The. 243 is an experts round not a beginner. You're not fly fishing and playing catch and release. You are killing animals, do it as quickly and humanely. As possible.

Just an FYI on the original post...All "overbore" calibers have the capability(based on case powder capacity to bore cross section area) to be damaging to the throat of the chamber.

Most people don't reload hot enough and shoot fast enough to significantly damage(burn) a barrel under reasonable use.

Which is why I recommended he sight in with 130gr deer loads and shoot yotes with that too. The bullet will not explode on a small animal like a yote. I once shot a deer while moose hunting with my. 338. There was minimal bullet expansion and virtually no meat loss. How many deer have you shot with deer rounds you can say that about?

I agree. That deer was shot with a 250gr Nosler Partition doing 2750fps. No hide slap, no bloodshot meat at all. Almost like an arrow hole.

Savage is also a great buy if trying to keep costs down.

I am also of the opinion that .270 is the most versatile caliber in Ontario, especially if you live in the southern half.

Boy, this string sure went along quickly. I don't own a 243 Win so I am not going to state from personal experience. Having said that there is a good article provided by this link. I think the important thing to take away is that regardless of which chamber you are going to buy, any high performance cartridge will/can cause premature barrel wear. My own experience is with military weapons and I can tell you that it is not hard to ruin a barrel by putting lots of rounds thru it too fast. In other words, not allowing the barrel some time to cool. I suspect that you are going to use this rifle for hunting and occasionally take it out to shoot at a range. In this instance I don't believe you will have any issues with barrel life (provided you don't start reloading yourself with hot loads).
I am with the crowd on the 270, great performer all around (I have a 30-06 and I would happily go with a 270).

LOL. You mean missing the barrel change on the C6 after each belt? I've seen one that didn't get changed after about 3, wow...

Wow so many ex military..Don't have alot time behind the the C6 or 9, but many barrel changes on the 50 and old GPMG lol. My old FNC1 on the RCR rifle team seen about 300rds a day during the summer, and while on C2 team in the evening we would run about 2 cases for two gun teams. MY C3 sniper rifle got about 300 rds per week while on the team as well. 1st Batallion RCR 1980 - 1986 then remustered to Line 052 Trade (hence Line052 name)

HAHAHAHA, back in the day, Steve Duhamal, Grant Gervais, Brian Mott, Sam Lavoie, Pat Noseworthy, Randy Watts, MCpl Seaworth, Paul Downs and Kieth Cunnigham. Some of those guys are here in Ottawa.

I tested the C6 on Sea King. The weapons techs would complain if I brought them back a barrel that had been cooked. I quickly learned it was much easier to 'drop it accidently' into the ocean. This made the paper work for them much easier. We looked at a 50 BMG on a recoilless mount but it was too costly. I sure love 50 BMG...what a great cartridge. John Browning left this masterpiece as a legacy. Only trouble is that I can't justify buying one.

TAC 50, in Meaford my last year (2005) 1820M 12" gong shooting at the range with JTF boys and Peel Regional shooting competion. What a fun shoot that was. PM'ed my cell to you.

Would love to shoot a TAC 50. Friend of mine instructs RCMP Sniper team. They had a 338 Lapua out at the ranges in Petawawa. They were shooting 2x3 gongs at 1900 m. There is a good YouTube video of a couple of guys in the US dropping a coyote at 1000 yds with a 338 Lapua...

Seen that one, .338 Lapua is dream for me but not likely in the near future. Unless caribou hunt is in the future. YouTube 50 BMG and Deer 1000M with tracers, the guy is a bad shot, but fun to watch

Having recently left a reserve artillery rgt. I concur.

....but lousy on coyotes, unless they're together when the HE round goes off....

Been there done that, liked the 106 recoiless rifle off Willis Jeep in ADP platoon, last 106 course before we got TOW weapons system. Here is me in 1982 with RCR dog and pony show. I am on the back sitting, notice the SMG on "jumpruck", back then it was just a rucksack. I love how AB call it a jumpruck now...lol

Sky - good point. In talking with my RCMP friend he said that the rounds they were using were $14 each. The Mounties (buyin in bulk) get them for $7. I like the ballistics of the 338 bullets but I won't ever own a Lapua. I do have a 338 Win Mag. It is my choice for moose and will be first in my suitcase when I go west to Alberta to hunt elk.

Before I bought the 22-250 for yotes I was loading 110 Gr V-Max bullets into my 30-06 (alternate was 125 Gr SST) for small game. If I knew I was going into an area where a shot beyond 300 yds was likely needed to take a coyote I would likely take the 30-06.
I see from the Hodgdon site that there is a 90 Gr bullet load for 270 Win that will rip out at 3600 fps (about 150 fps faster than my 30-06 will send the 110 Gr).
Now this would be a truly awesome coyote round, like a 243 on steroids.

I think you would be right on that. I reload, but can't find a use to justify, just nice to have on the future list...Lebaron has some ammo listed at $98.00 per box of 20...not...

Hey there i had to make thats choice not long ago for my first rifle, and had the same idea for uses. I ended up with a savage axis in .243. My reason being was , i'm not planning on hunting moose elk or bear till im more exsperienced in hunting, and the the .243 (FELT) to me to be a good starter caliber. low recoil, and flat shooting. have had lots of fun with it plinking hadnt had at coyotes yet with it, but love shooting it. Im not a big guy so i stayed with a smaller caliber to learn, though i regret not getting it in .223. .243 is even good for taken jack rabbits at a distance. Just learning and cant wait till this barrel burns out lol so i have an acscuse to go for another caliber probally .270, it is a very versitile calibre and was my original pick. Just thought it might be abit much to learn. Better safe than sorry.

Dannyboy - good selection. I am a long time advocate of the right tool for the right job. The Savage Axis is a great platform. Friend of mine shot a 1" group right out of the box with a Savage 30-06. The new 2014 Axis line will come with the Accu-Trigger which will make it a very hard combination to beat at any price.
Since I had the option, I use a 30 cal for hunting deer (>165 Gr bullets = quick kill) but it is a funtion of bullet placement and energy. The 243 at the right range is very effective for deer as well as small game. A 270 and 308 have about the same recoil and both provide potent stopping power for deer and other big game. Either of these two are painless to shoot and the ammo is readily available. With lighter bullets they can both be loaded for small game.

I'd wager the average hunter doesnt come anywhere close to 1500 rounds through a centrefire rifle in over time he owns it.

I wouldnt worry about it.

You have to take into consideration how much you will be shooting and what you are shooting. I hear the biggest barrel burner is the 22-250 and you should get about 4000 rounds before you notice a difference. Even then it is a small difference in groups. Depending what you shoot and what you intend on doing with the pelts. I would recommend a 3006. Largest range of billet weight.

270 is the caliber beagles1111 (27) I think what your asking is bullet weight. I believe the 243 will burn barrels but only if you were to hand load to maximum volocities and shoot lots. By the way a barrel only burns out the last inch or so of the barrel, so by cutting an inch off the end and re crowning it your good to go. If your worried about over heating with stainless, perhaps get a fluted barrel (or slow down lol). As far as 270 or 243 its your choice, 243 might seem a little light for moose, but my son has shot 12 moose with a 25-06 remington 700 which is in the same catagory, and a guy in my gang has taken them with a 6mm. Bullet placement is everthing, just owning a 375 H&H mag does not make you a better hunter.

I couldnt agree more canada man!! 6 mm, 243, 25-06 are all excellent deer cartidges. In the north where I live if we want a bigger gun most of us skip the "basleline" 270 and go to the big 30s. lol

At the range I am shooting I know that I regularly shoot one inch or less groups. My target is standing and I am sitting with a rest for my rifle. I have the option of picking WHERE in the head I want to place the bullet.
Never lost an animal with a head shot, but have had clean misses when shooting thru bush trying for a shoulder shot. Have also had the animals run a fair distance with no lungs/heart. Sooner have them die instantly on the trail...
i also have the option of waiting until tomorrow for a better shot.
